I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras and learn as much as they can from the internet.
Go to the store and hold them and try them to see what they feel like and how they take pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
Good Luck

I am by no means a camera expert, actually just the opposite but I am constantly amazed at how great of pictures my Kodak Z7590 takes. I do not think that model is still for sale but the newer Z or DX models are all about the same. They have bigger zoom than many 10x-12x, are a big seller, and decently priced. You could certainly get one at well under $500 but since you mention you would spend $500 maybe you are looking for something a little more. For $300-$400 you could get the Kodak camera with all accessories (dock, case, etc) If you want a good everyday use camera with a good zoom then I would go with the Kodak.

I recommend Canon (the Canon Sureshots are sleek and produce great imgs). Also, look at your computer capacity as well. Anything around 5-8 megapixels is good, the larger you get the more space it takes up on your computers hard drive and that can become a cost to upgrade too. Ask yourself what you are using it for...for work (real estate especially) you might want something with a higher megapixel and possibly spend a little on a zoom len attachment ($1000 or so), or if it's just for fun or have kids, etc... get something durable, yet easy to learn, too. Good Luck.

Check the review of the Canon PowerShot G7 in the Sept. issue of SHUTTERBUG magazine. They also review the Casio Exilim EX-Z1000, Olympus Stylus 1000, Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2S and the Samsung NV10.

This is the PERFECT camera for you!
You should get the PENTAX Optio W30. It has TONS of features, VERY good picture quality, its sleek & stylish. And to add to all that, its waterproof! You can see the camera here: http://www.pentaximaging.com/products/product_details/digital_camera--Optio_W30/reqID--9587364/subsection--optio
I have had the PENTAX Optio W10 (a slighty older version) for a few years now and I absoloutly LOVE it!

Most Kodaks are good. I have a Kodak DX7440 and I love it more than anyone elses camera. It's a little chunky, but it takes amazing pictures. I would suggest you stay away from Sony.

Go to the "Features Search" portion of www.dpreview.com and put in features you'd like. It will show you the models that match what you'd like in a camera.
