I asked a question similar to this and one person pointed out that officers in the Marine Corps get to live off base but I'm pretty sure if this were true, that they'd have to be within a certain distance of the base. Is there any truth to this and if so, what rank would you have to be? Curious because I'm thinking of going to OCS. Thanks.

Both Officers and Enlisted personnel can live off-base. The only difference is that a single enlisted person has to live in the dorms until the rank of E-4 or recieve special permission to live off-base. There is base housing for Officers too! It is generaly nicer than enlisted but not always. If you choose to live off-base, you can live wherever you want as long as you get to work on time. There is an Officer in my husband's unit that lives an hour and a half from the base!

Good Luck!

EDIT--oh, I forgot about BOQ--Bachelor Officer's Quarters. That is the on-base housing for single Officiers. You won't get a house on-base unless you are married. I don't believe that single Officer's are required to live there. We know several 1LT' and 2LT's that live off-base.

We are AF but usually things are the same for all the branches.

You can live on post or offpost. They do have separate housing onpost between officers and enlisted though. And offpost you would want to live close to base in case they call an alert, you have to be able to get to the unit ASAP but usually they will give you an hour. To a point the military doesnt really say where you can live.

unless they are essential personnel, they can live wherever they darn well please so long as they show up for duty on time. we have friends that commute over an hour each way, and other friends who live further than that, they only go home on weekends.
