Hi, what games do beagles like (besides hunting!!) My new beagle doesn't seem interested in fetching balls or frisbee, she mostly likes to chew and dig. Any suggestions what i can do to make her happier with playing? thanks

I used to play "find it" with my Beagle,Otis.I would let him smell things (toys, treats, kids,LOL) and then hide them all over the yard or house, then tell him to "Find it!" He would go sniffing across the yard or through the house and find evertything I had hidden, and find my niece and nephew ,who had hidden. Then I would praise him and give him a treat.Once,I thought one of my box turtles had goten out of it's pen and disappeared, but Otis came outside and I told him to find the turtle and put him in the turtle pen so he could get it's scent.Well,he went over to a corner of the pen that I had already searched, and started digging, and pretty soon,he had found the turtle, which had buried itself about 18 inches under the soil. Because Beagles are scent hounds,if they don't hunt, these kind of games are ideal for them, and help them to work off excess energy.

Since you mentioned that its a new dog, i would presume that she is still a puppy and like all puppies, they tend to chews stuffs alot. So its best you get her something to chew on. Beagles have quite strong jaws for their size, so its best that you get her something more durable like leather bones or those processed real bones. You should be able to get them in any pet shops.
Another thing that you should keep in mind is the beagles behavious in general. I have a beagle myself and he's a handful. Haha. As you already know, beagles are hunting dogs and its their nature to sniff and dig. They also have rather short attention span so its difficult to actually teach them tricks and all. They are very energetic and playful. Games like fetching balls and frisbee perhaps will interest them for a while but like I said once they catch a scent they will follow it and forget about retrieving the ball. It a classic beagle problem.
Perhaps you can modify the game a little. You should probably get a ball that has a bell in it to get her attention. Instead of throwing the ball for her to catch. Distract her with the ball and run around with the ball. . Remember, beagles are very energetic and they like to chase things. So running around chasing the ball will interest them most. But it can be tiring for you.
Another technic you can try is instead of throwing the upwards or bounce it on the floor instead of throwing it far away. Beagles like to jump so its more fun for them that way.
Finally, you can also exchange roles in the games. Instead of letting the beagle chase you around, once the beagle gets the ball, you chase after her. They like being chased at.
At the end of the day, its also good exercise for yourself. Good luck and have fun with your beagle

Hmm, this is what I do with my dog:

Get a dog ball where there are slots to stick in (We found ours at walmart...it was not specialed for this, but we figured out this game) a treat and make sure the dog knows the treat is inside, and throw the ball.

Our dog hates to play, and this is where she goes barreling down after the treat, and trys to get it out of the slots of the ball.

Also, he/she might play more once he gets to know you. Try massaging him. Massage his ears in a circular motion, or his back legs-lightly

Oh, and a big favorite: putting the rope toy behind your back and whipping it around to each side. Dogs like to guess which side its on.

My beagle mix doesn't like frisbee and fetching, either. He likes tug of war with his rope toy, and he likes it when we get one of those laser lights and let him chase the laser all over the floor. He likes to play with his toys, so if I pick one up and squeek it, then throw it, sometimes he'll chase it. He also likes the Hide-A-Squirrel toy.

I have a digging game that I play with my poodle.

First, I have a squeaky ball. Then I hide it under a pillowcase. (Just the pillowcase not a pillow.)

Then while the ball is buried, I press on the pillowcase to squeak the ball. My dog loves that and he pulls at the pillowcase with his teeth. Then he digs at the pillowcase. When he finally gets the ball out.... I tell him "good boy".

0_o he loves that game!

you have a hunting dog that lives in packs with little human contact, contact your beagle clubs or rescues and find activities for your dog that use her skills and get her interested or get creative and make her hunt for treats or toys
