If you take out all of the active ingredients (drugs) in a cough syrup what would it be made of? What could you use as a substitute to make your own?

Sugar, water, and flavoring. You could use the same along with an antitussive to make your own. But why? how could you be sure your compound didn't have unsafe chemical reactions?

Cough syrup is cheap!

Diphenhydramine maleate, Ammonium chloride, Sodium citrate, Calciluvin, Phalcodein,Codein,Vasaka are some of the ingredients of various cough syrups.

otc syrups have dextromethoraphan (sp), which does squat for coughs...though it is the next teenager fav for taking high doses and having hallucinations (if they survive). RX syrups usually have codeine, which works pretty good, though it doesn't have to be in syrup form to work
