It seems to give a more accurate picture of the state of the church than the misinformation the church itself gives.

Wow. Notice how this dovetails nicely with Global Warming and the Advent of Internet Usage?

By the end of the next century mormonsim will have been banished into the "Mythology" section - and collecting more dust than "Beowulf".

But it will be damn hot.

The graphs are misleading because they are still showing growth.

The first one shows the number of new baptised converts has dropped since the 80s. However, any number in the plus column is an addition to the mormon church and therefore represents growth, unless there are more people leaving the church rather than joining it. The reports don't address the fact that Mormonism tends to be a very sticky faith.

Interesting website but not anything that I haven't seen or heard before. Most of the information is good. There are a few, okay, several, misinterpretations that I am not going to take the time to explain. Much information is taken out of context and some of it is just plain wrong. The membership charts are good and it is not a surprise or shock that our membership efforts have tappered off somewhat. During the era of President Kimball, the missionary push was big and the results showed it. Since then the intensity has waned somewhat and the results show it. President Hinckley is well aware of our retention problems. That is a sign of the times. Worldliness has crept into everybodies lives and tempts us away from the ways of the spirit. Only half of my children are currently active in the church, much to my chagrin. It is not easy to be a Latter-day Saint. It takes great personal sacrifice to develop the kind of faith necessary to achieve exaltation. Only through great service to one another can we develop the Christlike love necessary to achieve our eternal goals. Thus, many today find the requirements of membership too difficult or too restrictive on their personal lifestyles and therefore lay their activity aside while they pursue the ways of the world.
Protestant faiths do not have such requirements on their members and thus become more attractive to worldly people.
Never fear, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will carry on and continue to be a light unto the world for all who seek it.

I've known people that have at least in part believed the church to be true because of the growth of the church. But it doesn't really effect my testimony how many people are converted every year.

This reminds me of a scripture in Jeremiah 16;16
"Behold, I will send for many fishers, saith the LORD, and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks. "

Fishing, at least with nets, catches a lot of fish at a time, while hunting is a more slow and usually only one at a time. In the early days of the church, and usually whenever a new country is opened to missionaries, the converts seem to come in droves. But after a time it slows down.

You know, I believe what I believe because I have studied it out and prayed about it. I do not believe what I believe because such and such amount of people believe it. That would be blindly following the crowd. And doesn't the bible tell us "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. " James 5:1
So whether there is 500 people today and there was 400000 people 4 years ago, that has no baring on what is true.

I've never heard that we are the "fastest" growing. What church are you comparing us to? Sorry but what's your point? Is this just another Mormon bashing question?
