The primary reason we have a military is so that people can go about their daily lives, nonchalantly, and in freedom.
That is the goal of the military.
To preserve what is know as the American way of life.
Which is freedom, freedom to live, to enjoy life, to work, to go to school, to raise a family, to party, to do good deeds, to do bad deeds, to speak the truth, to ignore the truth, to act out of love, to act with hatred.
People in the military, especially in a volunteer military, understand that they will go in harms way and that they will be separated from their friends and family, and that they will endure arduous and dangerous duty. At times.
And it can't be all about the money, 'cause the money ain't that good.
I think most military people have deep inside of them the knowledge that they are serving a greater good.
I spent thirty years in the military.
When my first son was born, I had been in Nha Trang, Republic of Vietnam, for two weeks.
When I first saw him, it was for one week on R&R in Hawaii, and he was seven months old. When I next saw him he was a year old.
I never felt sorry for myself.
Although I never did like the realization that I might get killed by somebody who didn't even know me.
As they said in the Godfather, "This was the business I chose."
The irony was that I was opposed to our involvement in Vietnam, but did not feel that I could let my personal belief override the contract I signed, the oath I took.
If you want to end the war in Iraq and bring home our troops, then elect a democratic congress.
Oh, wait, you did.
I guess you'll just have to vote in Barack Hussein Obama in the 2008 presidential election and let him bring the troops back home.
But don't hold your breath.
People's perceptions of events seem to change when they are the one's who will be held responsible for the consequences of their decisions.

I'm pretty sure many people here do. Two things happen: it's getting so used to that many people don't really stop and think anymore and the 21st century hippies who hate our troops and call them things like killers. Regardless, I'm about to go into a Marine Officer school next year to become an officer and I'm surrounded by many people I know who are in the military. I respect everything they do, every person should, too.

Yet President Bush has taken more vacations than any other U.S. President in history;
Yet our U.S. Congress takes a month of in August without having accomplished anything of significance since they were installed last January.
Yet the Iraqi puppet government takes a month-long vacation while our U.S. soldiers keep dying in a country where they shouldn't even be fighting.
And, finally, we gluttonous, slothful, arrogant Americans keep taking our own luxury vacations, buying our new luxury cars, maxing out our credit cards, and acting like everything's 'peachy' while innocent American soldiers and Iraqi citizens keep dying because of an unjustifiable, unconstitutional, illegal, immoral 'war' that is being fought all for the sake of OIL and WAR PROFITEERING.
Adolph Hitler said it best: "How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think."

I think about it everyday. My husband was in the Army, and did a tour in Iraq. I appreciate what he and every other servicemember who has served has done for our country.

I agree wholeheartedly. I know of one such hero who saw his daughter when she was born and then not again until she was 9 months old.
They need our prayers and deserve our utmost respect!

I appreciate it to, but you know what. they signed up for it, so in part I dont feel sorry for them. However I think our leader is dumb and that the troops should be taken out.
EDIT: Not anti-troops anti-war. I hope everyone is ok
