It is scary to think of my grandparents seeing the world as it is today. I would be ashamed for them to see the things happening in today's world.

The Bible does not specifically say whether people can look down on us who are still on the earth. It is highly likely that they cannot. Why? One, they would sometimes witness us sinning. Two, they would sometimes see things that would cause them grief. Three, people in heaven are so occupied with worshipping God and enjoying the glories of Heaven that they truly have no interest in what is happening here on earth. The very fact that they are free from sin, in heaven, and in God’s presence is enough for them to be happy. While it is possible that God allows people in heaven to look down upon their loved ones, the Bible gives us no reason to believe this actually occurs.

I always pictured the people in heaven watching us like we're a tv show, but I guess the only way to find out would be to die and go to heaven.

Yes they do. It called the Communion of Saints. However, the earth and what's happening here is not the number one priority for them. They are with the living God, the Holy Trinity now. They behold Him face to face. They issue forth prayers unto Him on our behalf because they still have loved ones on earth. We are not to "pray" to them as we would pray to God but simply ask them to pray to God FOR us because they're perfectly inclined with His will.

I am assuming they are dead. Read Ecclesiastes 9:5,10. They are not aware of anything for now.
