It all depends on your preferences and how it works for you. Music is a form of tool that some use for focusing. Others prefer not to use any thing because they believe it distracting. I like nature sounds as a background, and some music, or I don't use anything and keep things silent. It all depends on what works for me at that time.

From my perspective as a Christian drummer...Music is not necessary in meditation,as the spirit of man is communing in tune with the Spirit of God and makes it's own music.

I find background music is good. If I try to relax in total silence (besides sleep, that is) my mind tends to wander is all sorts of directions.

Now, if I have some music playing, say something pleasant and mellow, then my mind will also be so.

That's just me though, best wishes.

It is personal preference.
Some people meditate with a guided mediation, some with music.
Try different ways for yourself and see how they feel.
Some sit placing in a certain direction also.

Music is fine if it helps calm you, but it can't be distracting- it should be something that you can tune out that is relaxing. Anything that promotes a feeling of happiness is good.
