I saw a recruiter today and he said he can't guarantee me one, but I've spoken to a few friends and people I work with who are/used to be in the military, and they all said that was absolute BS. Can anyone shed some more light on this, maybe give me some tips for getting this position in writing? Thanks so much!

The answer is yes, you can be gauranteed a position as a USAF linguist. Regardless of the "needs of the Air Force", a contract is a contract and it must be honored. If you can get a Top Secret clearance and score high enough on your ASVAB and DLEP (sp?) than you can get a contract that gaurantees you the position.

The only thing that may happen is that you'll sit in the Delayed Enlistment Program extra long while you wait for your class seat to come up. Talk to a recruiter and he'll hook you up with the necessary tests.

Not necessarily.

1. the AF might not need linguist right now.
2. the class's at Monterrey might all be filled up for the next year. ( you have 4 services all sending people to the same class's )

3. Your recruiter in the AF cannot guarantee you any AFSC.

AFSC selection is done by the career councilors at MEPS for the USAF.

4. So you can go to MEPS, take the Asvab and DLAT test, then talk to the career councilors.

If you are offered linguistic training, then you can continue,

If you aren't offered Linguistic training, then you can decide if you want to be in the AF in another job, or walk away.

You have to understand, AF recruiters, don't even have quotas anymore.

They have so many people trying to enlist, for so few slots, they don't have to do anything anymore.

AF recruiters aren't even taking people to MEPS anymore, if they start demanding a guarenteed AFSC right off the bat.

The AF now makes people sign a statement saying they are not going to MEPS to job shop, before they will even take them to MEPS.

It's just not worth thier time or effort.

In your case, you haven't even taken the DLAT test yet, the military won't even talk to anyone about language training, untill after they take the DLAT test and score high enough on it.

It boils down to three things number one is qualifications. They can't offer you a job if you don't score high enough or meet the other requirements such as being a citizen, passing a credit check, and also passing the DLAB(extra test to qualify as a linguist). Even if you have all of that if the Air Force does not have any linguist jobs at that point they can't offer you a job that doesn't exist. They only get so many slots. If eveything works out then YES you can have a guaranteed linguist job. your recruiter is telling the truth. he can't offer you a job, all job related things happen at the MEPS

As a former USMC officer, who worked in recruiting, I can say that if you PROVE that you have a language talent that is needed, you will, after Basic, most probably be given an MOS that is in the linguistic field. Now if you are fluent in Spanish, no, that won't work. But if you can speak, read and write one of the following; Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Farsi (or any middle eastern dialect) you will have a great chance to get that linguist slot. Look at who are the threats right now to the USA, those are the languages the military needs linguists/translators in. And yes, you can get this on your contract before you go in, if, as I stated, you can prove your ability/fluency.
Good luck

You can enlist in the AF with a guaranteed AFSC (assuming you meet all of the qualifications), but that doesn't mean it's an option your recruiter is currently authorized to offer. The AF isn't hungry. You could try getting a linguist slot in another branch of the military.

"Air Force recruiters will often refuse to process an applicant who is "job locked." In effect, it's a waste of time and resources to process an applicant who is determined to be interested in only a couple of job possibilities, when there are hundreds of other qualified applicants, waiting in line behind him/her, who are willing to be more flexible. If your ASVAB scores are good enough for it, YES you can be guaranteed a Linguist Career in the AF. A recruiters job is to try and get to you to sign up where they need you and to lie to you, to get you there. Talk to a different recruiter or call your local MEPS office.

the recruiter cannot. However, IF you qualify for it(score high enough on both the ASVAB and the DLAB as well as be able to get a Clearance) AND there are slots available, the Classifier you sit down with at MEPS can get it in writing for you.

the RECRUITER has ZERO pull when it comes to assigning jobs and schools for said jobs. All that is done at MEPS.

In the military, you can be guaranteed nothing. All contracts have a statement in them that reads "to the needs of the Army", or "to the needs of the Air Force". There's a good reason they put that clause in there too. I would say that if you really want to be a linguist the only way to really ensure you get it is to study chinese, or gulf arabic.
