If it has an odd smelling odor, and resembles the color of a grapefruit. Quite painful too in the later stages.

Hi there, there will be a swelling around the entrance point of the piercing (don't worry about a small amount of "white" crust as this is normal because this is white blood cells gathering around the area to help heal the wound as it were) any unusual colour such as yellow or blue you may have a problem also if you have any discharge (puss) but this is simple to over come, I had a similar problem with one of mine (I have a pair done 6 years ago)

Go to your local chemist and but some Hydrogen Peroxide Solution (6%) B.P 20 Vols pour a small amout into an old cup (as you don't want to ruin a useable cup as this stuff smells really badly) get a cotton bud and wipe the area with solution using the cotton bud (this is the part that stings) as the solution eats (yes eats) the infection you will find that the skin bubbles which you will hear, then leave to dry natarally do this every day after about a week you will find that the piercing has healed and you will have no more problems with it for as long as you have the peircing.

I would recomend that a friend that you trust does this for you as it is tricky to see what you are doing in a mirror.

Hope this helps and good luck with your piercing

Most piercings will be red, have some swelling and clear to yellowish "crusties"
Over caring for a new piercing can also irritate the area, and you can also have allergic reactions to the products your using.

The best way is to have a piercer look at it.

But yes, a gross smell, or even bleeding after the first day or two can be signs of infections.

my tragus piercing was fine for about 4 months then went really nasty and I had to take it out. It got really swollen and hot and had green pus leaking out, it was really unpelasant.

Swelling, redness, and leakage...that'll about do it.

I had to get one of mine taken out due to infection...five minutes after the piercer took it out, I had a trail of pus down my face...

It was GROSS!

But I would still do it again. :)
