I worked as a candy striper (do they still call them that?) at a local hospital. You help sick people by bringing them water, their flowers from loved ones, helping with menu selections, etc. I also gained some HS credits for the work. You learn a lot working in a hospital; it was hard work but very rewarding.

Packed clothes in a warehouse to be sent to Palestinian refugees
Served food in a soup kitchen
Mentored developmentally delayed kids (really young kids, around 5 or 6 years old)
Helped build a playground with Habitat for Humanity

We had to do 140 comm. service hours a year. The soup kitchen was the easiest to get involved with. Check out http://www.idealist.org, click on "Volunteer Opportunities" and down at the bottom where you can check off "Age," select "Teens." The search should just give you options with organizations that are looking for teen volunteers.

From the age of 14 to 18, I volunteered at Cedars-Sinai Medical Hospital. It was such a rewarding experience to make someone smile who has been laying in a hospital bed depressed for days. It was truly a gratifying experience. I donated about 250+ hours, it was great!

I volunteered for environmental type causes like recycling or picking up trash in public areas. Those are good activities for groups of young people or families with young people. They will always need to be done and you can feel good about how much you are contributing to the community.

When I was 14 I was involved with missionary work down in Mexico. We helped rebuild a church and a orphanage at a Mission after they were ravaged by an earthquake. We also went out in the poor community and handed out beans and rice to the residents.

I kept my young cousins for my aunt and uncle to work. I worked everyday during the summer at the ballpark concession stand and never got paid (that was before the adults had to pay the children to do their work). I cleaned my grandfather's house and worked in his garden.
I also kept neighborhood children (including my little brother) for moms who worked---never got paid for any of the babysitting and I certainly did a lot of it. I kept the church nursery every Wednesday night during prayer meeting. Worked on the church bus ministry. During school, I worked with 1st and 2nd graders who had difficulty reading--giving them a one-on-one tutor. Worked as office volunteer in the school office.
