british actors are depicted as the bad guys?

The same thing was happening in the 80's when the cold war was on, so is this an indication that the relationship between america and britain is the same as the relationship between soviet russia and america?...because during the duration of the war, russians were shown to be the bad guys...now its the brits?

Because they want the villain to be sexy.

Not in the movies I've seen.

But the British and French are stereotyped in most american minds as being more sauve and intelligent, thus a challenge. Usually if it's both americans it's the government against one guy. Not much interest in a battle between two americans of equal intelligence.

Most of the Russia stuff was just propaganda. Because of the cold war many already saw them as bad guys. You can't have movies where the bad guys hide out in caves, so that takes out Al Queda. So the most logical choice is to make the bad guy of a nationality considered more intelligent and sauve.

It's really nothing personal. Just good conflict.

Whenever the Americans want a 'villian' they are much more likely to 'accept' a Brit than someone from elsewhere.

If you see "Schindler's List", every single Nazi is actually played by a British Actor.

What other actor could play "Hannibal Lecter", apart from a Brit., Sir Tony Hopkins?

Be afriad, very afraid, the British are coming!

Edit: I suppose Charlie Chaplin, possibly the most famous 'British' movie actor of all time was just a villain then?

in a way thats true but there are just as many movies where brits are the good guys: james bond, the transporter, the italian job, etc. the reason alot of the villians are british is just because most british actors make it believable. like someone else said it takes a lot of talent to play a convincing evildoer.

It might be because movies that take place in the US want to have an outsider of the area be the 'bad guy.' And since you guys speak English, but you can tell they're not from the US they make a perfect outsider, such as a bad guy. There's also a bunch of movies where Brits play good guys.

Not necessarily! Bristish actors are some of the best actors, they get to choose their scripts. If it depicted them in a negative light, they would oppose or at least verbalize this practice. Did you know minorities are the only ones who are really limited to sterotyped roles? Every so often we get a few that become really superstars.

I, like many other Americans, really like British actors and actresses. They are too powerful in the movie industry to be victims.

Though not always true, he does have a point... just watch the Star Wars movies, especially Episodes 4-6. The empire is filled with nothing but British actors!

I'd love to see more examples. When you say "British actors" I immediately think of Sean Connery (good guy), Ioan Gruffyd (sp -- good guy), Daniel Radcliff (good guy), Vivien Leigh (... protagonist, anyway!) Sometimes Alan Rickman plays a bad guy, but he's just got that kind of great presence about him. Since I don't see the Brits as necessarily being shown as the bad guys, I can't answer your question.

Because our accent is considered to be cold and unemotional.

There is a little shift however towards the French now (Diehard 4.0) because of the realisation after all these years that the French used them in the war of independance to distract the Brits from one of our wars against them.

As for your examples.... you didn't offer any specific examples, and this is the new millenium... NOT the 1990's... So what's your point? If that was really a "truth".. which you haven't shown by specific example, it would have been a truth 10 years ago or more. Get over it. It's the movies for goodness sake!

They're called movies.

Hollywood - and any other movie studio - can do whatever they want in movies. I remember the crappy movies about Vietnam depicting us as bloodthirsty animals.

They're movies. Not documentaries. Not reality. No connection with anything but box office sales.
