Unfortunately this is not something you can prevent but you can take steps to lessen the chances of it happening.

!. Don't put yourself in dangerous situations

2. Be aware of your surroundings at all times

3. Before you leave the store to walk out to your car -put your car keys in your hand. Have the key ready to put in the door lock. If you are attached in the parking lot -you can use the key as a weapon (gouge his eye out).

4. Once you get into your car - lock your door immediately. Once you are in the car with the door locked - then decide what CD you want to play. Also don't open the door for any strangers.

5. While walking around in public - keep your head up and constantly looking around. Bad guy would rather go after the girl walking with her head down or who is digging her keys out of her purse b/c she is less likely to see him coming.

6. Take a martial arts or self protection class

7. Ask questions like the one you did here - think about what you would do if the situation ever happened to you. That way, if it ever does - you already have a plan of action.

First, DON'T carry a weapon unless you are aware of your local laws eg here in the UK carrying a knife on the street carries a 2 year jail sentence. Remember there is always the danger an attacker may be able to take a weapon off you and use it against yourself.

Try not to travel alone, if you must then keep to well-lit busy areas, make sure someone knows where you are and what time you will be back at.

Consider carrying a personal alarm (which makes a very loud noise when you pull the pin on it) or taking a self defence course.

If someone does try to rape you then don't try to fight him- you won't win. Instead scream, spit, try to vomit or urinate, make it as difficult and unpleasant as possible for him.

One other trick is to carry a purse with a very small amount of money as well as your normal purse. If you get robbed throw the fake purse away from you letting him see it, this will likely distract his attention which may give you time to run off.

Hope this helps

I will also tell you that you are far more likely to die of illness--such as heart attack, stroke, or cancer--than you are in a violent attack. And women who do die as a result of violence are far more likely to die at the hands of an intimate partner (boyfriend or husband) or former intimate partner than at the hands of a stranger.

But the news media in the U.S. has an "if it bleeds, it leads" mentality, splashing scary violent crime all over the place. No wonder you're scared.

Still, it doesn't hurt to be smart, be aware, and be confident. If a street, an ATM, a building gives you bad vibes, avoid it.

I recommend you read "The Gift of Fear" or "Fear Less" by Gavin de Becker. He runs a security agency and could be considered in expert in such matters. I think he will help put your fears into perspective.

Avoid being out in public alone as much as possible, but do not be scared when you are. Stay calm.
Carry a cell phone.
Take a self-defense class.
If you're out in public make sure there's people around, don't go walking down a dark alley if you can take a crowded street. Being in public eye deters attacks and makes sure someone is around to hear your scream for help.
SCREAM LOUD and fight back! Not only does it give you a chance, it psycologically tells your attacker that you aren't going to come easy and it may deter him. Don't be easy pickings. Things like pepper spray may also deter them.

Yes, screaming helps.
And kick their shins, stomp on their feet, kick below the belt and pepper spray their eyes.
Anything that makes them think, "Maybe this isn't the right girl to try to abduct."
That give you a chance to escape (run fast), but try to take notes about size, weight, hair color, clothes. Then call police as soon as possible.
If someone you don't know comes up and says, "You have to come with me, your mother's been hurt in a traffic accident." That's the time to pull out the pepper spray.

it just depends on the situation. My kids would go "chicken" on someone, so I'd probably have to do that to. "chicken" meaning...crazy. poking the eyes, getting a death grib on the genitals, etc.
But seriously...if you are really concerned, take some self defense classes.
