No its not safe. Before you ever try to cross at a streetlight take the time to look at any car that has not come to a compleat stop.More people get struck every year by drivers in a hurry and try to beat the light.Wait until you know its safe to cross.Best of luck.

Not every city or every town has the image of that little man walking or not walking. Some actually say "Walk" or "Do Not Walk." The answer is that it is always safest to cross at a streetlight than in the middle of the street. The rationale for this is that when one jaywalks, one has the traffic moving on both sides and therefore are more apt to be hit by a moving vehicle. At a streetlight, even with a right turn on red allowed in many states, you still have the advantage of safety because you only have to watch the turn lanes. It is assumed you are crossing the street on which the flow of traffic is now stopped because of the red light.

Even though many states and towns have enacted the "Yield to Pedestrians" in crosswalks, it's still a very good idea to cross at the streetlight unless the traffic is not heavy. I've watched people cross the street and not look either way because they assume it's the driver's responsibility to stop as you're crossing! What if he/she didn't see you step off the curb and into the street?

And your definition of streetlight is? A streetlight is a light along a street that lights the side of the road. A traffic light is a signal used to direct traffic usually where two roads cross. That said, it is (or should be) safe to cross where there is a crosswalk. Crosswalks are painted at most signal/traffic lights and at some stop signs and thus, these are the best place to cross the street. In a crosswalk the pedestrian legally has the right of way BUT you still must watch out for yourself because some people don't care about pedestrians.

Only if the light is green and the image of the man is on. And...it has to be on the side of the street you are on.
