I have tried to disassemble my Remington 870 for a cleaning (I have the home defense version with mag extentsion and 18 inch barrel) And when I tried to unscrew the mag cap, it wouldn't budge. I have tried to open the chamber half way and then unscrew it but it still wouldn't work. I have even tried pliers! can someone help me with disassembly? Am I supposed to unscrew the mag extension instead of the mag cap?

I'm not trying to insult your intelligence here, but it's righty tighty, lefty loosey. Maybe you were trying to unscrew the mag cap the wrong way? only thing I could think of.

As a Gunsmith and Remington Authorized Repair Center, I have to admit I'm confused. If you bought your shotgun with a Remington 870 factory extension, The extension base itself IS your magazine cap. They only thing I can figure is you are trying to unscrew the cap on the end of your magazine extension and that will just turn round and round and won't unscrew. Is it possible to e-mail me a digital picture of the extension as it is attached to your 870? If so I will provide you with an e-mail address!

You have to unscrew the mag extension instead of the cap.

Watch out for that spring when you unscrew it; I kinda forgot about it and sent my extension tube threw my garage door window. Embarrassing. . .

the mag extension itself is you mag cap. the male portion is the bottom of the extension. the female portion is your barrel ring. the barrel ring does not come off. it's part of the barrel.

I'm not 100% on how to take that one apart, but if you go to the Remington website you can look at the manuel in a PDF version, and it should tell you how to do it. You can also request they send you the owners manuel in the mail.
