But its free.

I see so many people riding on the wrong sides of the road (toward traffic) and not following what we know as the rules.

Maybe if someone taught a class to tell us what the right rules were then maybe everyone would be lots safer. And they'd give you a bike license.... like a drivers license but it states that you been to that class/classes and its safe for you to be on the road.

5 year olds won't have to go. They'll have an age where you have to do it.

That would certainly help, but I think that we can provide better training for car drivers as well. I live in a city with a lot of cyclists, and most of them know the rules of the road. I see many more drivers being rude to them, hogging the road, or breaking traffic laws than cyclists.

And maybe have a bike rider's permit or something? Some people have not clue what the laws are, and ride their bikes very dangerously. I actually did have a "biker's ed" class that I took when I was seven years old, as soon as I could balance myself on a bike. We learned how to signal, how to cross a busy intersection, how to ride in a group--anything you could want or need. I think it should be required in order to keep unsafe bicyclists off the road so that the streets can be made safer for everyone.

Actually I would rather have people ride against traffic (People should walk towards traffic too) so they can see the cars and get out of the way. They also should be treated like a driver and not be allowed to wear headphones so they can hear what is going on around them. Parents also need to teach their kids to be responsible with their bikes.

GOod point. They should also have it for pedestrains. I run through a large path through a huge park, it used to be a street and cars would drive through, but no more. SO now its this huge street you can run or bike through, with 2 yellow lines dividing it. And still you have idiots jogging on the wrong side, riding their bikes on the worng side, right at you. It can be scary and dangerous. I want to grab those people and scream WRONG SIDE!!!!! Why are people so ignorant and stupid???

Good idea. Some of these idiots are suicidal, but if you hit them, you're the one who's going to get in big trouble because you are the one with the responsibility of "sharing the road."

Besides, it might make things safer for them.

Not going to happen though.

Incidentally, I once saw one on the freeway. Where's a cop when you need one?!

Don't agree. Bikes are going to save the planet - if enough people get them and give up their love affair with the automobile. What might help for now is if every bike had one of those get-out-of-the-way bells, you know, like the one's we had when we were kids? Loud ones, then day-dreaming/dazed pedestrians could jump out of the way.

That would be great. It should be required all through grade school. I'm amazed we don't have more cars hitting bicyclers the way they ride around here.

Yes there should be. I can't count how many times I almost hit people or kids because of their lack of knowledge of bicycle safty.
