Everything depends on whether you were working or not before you became ill. If you were working regularly and paying FICA taxes, are a US citizen and have documented stage 4 cancer then you will easily qualify for Social Security Disability. If you were not working you might still qualify for SSI (different program) if you do not have substantial assets. You can learn your options here.
http://www.ssa.gov/disability/
Call your local Social Security office tomorrow to get your claim officially opened ASAP.
Also join the Yahoo disability issues group for more info on how to quickly wade through the red tape so you can qualify sooner.

You will be eligible for SSDI, and no, you don't have to be destitute to get it; it's based on the previous year's highest- earning quarter. You have paid into it, so it's your money.
You can apply online at ssa.gov
You will get it the first time you apply, since you have stage 4 cancer.

You can get alot of information online at www.ssa.gov. You can even apply online. I'm on disability. Your income is based on how long you've worked. Check out the website. Someone will contact you after you've applied online. Good luck to you.
