This proverb now has two meanings: people pay a price for being always on the move, in that they have no roots in a specific place (the original meaning); or people who keep moving avoid picking up responsibilities and cares.

So either a rolling stone doesn't get crap stuck to it because it's moving too fast [most common modern use]

*or*

It moves too fast for things of value to have time to develop.

There was a fellow whose father always advised him to find himself a trade, and stick to it. He would start to learn a particular business, then quit after a year or so. "A rolling stone gathers no moss!", his father would warn him.

Well, after about twenty years or so, the son finally decided he would write a book about his life's experiences, and described all the different ways he knew one could make a living, and all the places he had lived. The book was an immediate hit, and he became fabulously wealthy and famous. When he returned home to see his father again, his father immediately greeted him with "Ah, my son! How true it is that the ramblin' bee gathers the honey!"
