The Jet Stream, more commonly known simply as the 'jet', usually moves north in Summer and sits somewhere over Iceland in the north Atlantic.

Due to el Nino and other weather activity in the Pacific Ocean, the 'jet' has not moved as far north as is usually the case and is stuck somewhere south of Paris [Europa].

The 'jet' normally sucks hot air northward from an area around the Azores. This hot air, cooled slightly, then arrives over the British Isles and this causes our summer months to be just slightly warmer than our winter months.

What usually happens here in UK is our Summer months are plagued by on/off warm/cool damp/dry weather. The most frequently used sentence in English in Summer in UK is "Rain stopped play". Happens every year just when the cricket season starts.

At this time of year the Jet Stream would normally be positioned approx midway between Scotland and Iceland. Currently it's lying across Wales, Central England and over the North Sea to Denmark and southern Scandinavia.

It's not all that unusual and happens every few years, it doesn't follow any regular pattern. It could do the same again next year or it could be many years before we have a repeat event.

The behaviour of jet streams is dictated more by temperature differences in the air masses to the north and south of them. The greater the temp diff the more activity - faster winds over a wider area.

As the world warms the temp differences increase and it's likely that future anomalies in Jet Stream activity will become more common. It's also influenced to an extent by global weather phenomena such as El Nino and La Nina.

In short, there is no precise answer why it's further south than normal. It's a weather system and like all weather systems there's a degree of unpredictability and a great many influencing factors.

The jet stream is a localize band of high winds in the upper atmosphere that wrap around the entire planet. Both the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere have one and is caused in part by the Earth's rotation. The jet stream resembles a sine wave and move about the planet. The jet stream can be thought of as a river that can bring cold air out of the Arctic or can bring up tropical warm air from the equator depending on if the wave is down or up. Many things have influence of its movement from warming seas "El Nino" and low pressure systems storms. The good news is that the jet stream will change again and the weather will change again.

Its part of a cycle that comes around every 10/15 years called El-nino (or something like that).
Its because ethe earth doesn't revolve on a perfect axis, every few years the weather systems fluctuate.

No body seems to be mentioning the El nino this year. Is it to brain wash the great unwashed into believing their very existence is killing the planet ?
