My male english bulldog is constantly barking at the neighbors when he sees them thru the cracks of the fence. They're not doing anything out of the ordinary ( the neighbors) just hanging out in their backyard. My dog will start barking excessively & jumping up against the fence. My neighbor (an older lady) is now scared of my dog because she thinks he's going to try to bite her. He seems to be obsessed with them now & I've tried for days scooting him away with a broom, making him sit down elsewhere while he calms down. But as soon as he catches his breath again he'll walk back to the fence & do this routine over again! I thought being repetative in showing him to stop would help him stop but its not working. We walk him daily, he has plenty of toys, another dog in the backyard with him and we bring them (dogs) both in to spend time with my husband & I.

mI don't know what to do with this proble,

We just moved in about 4 months ago. It just started about a month ago.

My obedience class teacher who has trained 13,000 dogs since 1975 said this is what to do about incessant barking....

Use a choke collar and tie a short piece of rope to it.

(Make sure the choke collar is on properly-- it should be put on in the shape of a "P" with the end that you will attach the rope to on the left.)

When the dog is outside have him on a harness and a lead attached to the harness so he won't run all over the yard.

When he starts barking-- go out into the yard and say, "No bark." Give a short, hard pull on the choke collar rope and then immediately release.

If he keeps barking, say "No bark" again and repeat.

Sometimes dogs take a long time to learn this lesson. Personally, I would just correct the dog 10 times and then put him in the house. Overall, a dog can need to be corrected over 40 times over several days for the lesson to sink in.

You can try it..... and if it's not working then you should definitely talk to a professional dog trainer. You really have to have the choke collar on properly. Also an english bulldog's neck may be so muscular that it won't feel the choke collar as much......?

In obedience class, we use the choke collar for everything-- just a dog motivated by treats will not obey consistently.

OK, when the neighbours come out into their yard, you need to be ready with a pocketful of treats he really, really likes. When he barks, tell him "quiet", as soon as he stops, give him a treat and say "good quiet". You need to stay very low-key and calm the whole time because if you're excited, your dog will get even more so.

If he barks, stand very close to him, say "uh-uh!!", "quiet" and when he's quiet, again give him a treat and say "nice quiet". You need to read his body language so you can then stop him before he barks. Keep on giving him treats and saying good quiet. You need to be very, very consistent, both with lots of treats and with the praise. After a short while, he'll start to associate all these treats he's getting with the people next door and with not barking.

Your dog probably doesn't know the neighbors that well, since you just moved! Try going over to your neighbor's house and introducing the two together. Your dog is just curious and wants to know who they are! Tell your neighbor that there is nothing to be worried about, and, that he just wants to get to know her better! Your dog should stop barking after the meet! I hope that this helps! Thanks, and good luck,

Get a bark collar that beeps when he barks. Dogs don't like the beeping sound, and it stops them from barking almost immediately.
