I don't think you can really travel for free in LA, although there is a fair amount of public transportation to choose from...

As for what you can do, there's plenty to do for free in LA. A lot of it is places where you'll be looking at stuff you could do for money, but you'll just have to take in the sights instead. Check out...

1. Hollywood and Highland (shopping complex/tourist area-right on Hollywood Blvd. so you'll see that whole thing)

2. Santa Monica Pier and beach/Venice Boardwalk, also the canals in Venice (modeled after Venice, Italy)

3. Griffith Park (awesome place for hiking/hanging out and totally free!!)

4. Shopping on Melrose Avenue

5. Some of the L.A. walking tours. You can find a book and probably a website with walking tours. Check out one of the many historic public libraries in LA and if you have ID with your address on it in your home state, you can get a Visitors Library Card and check out one of these books. Or you can just look at it and make copies.

6. While we're on the subject, you've gotta see the Downtown Public Library! and some of the surrounding stuff is really cool!

Hope that helps, and enjoy your visit!
