for past few months i have had frequent, sometimes daily, thoughts of suicide. these consist of how i would, wot wd be most effective, consequences of success or failure, impact on others.
i dont believe myself to be depressed and i have no intention of killing myself, no idea why i have these thoughts.
recently my 4 closest friends told me i had changed, become irritable, distant, unapproachable and angry.
i do not recognise this in mself other than my friends have been irritating me more.
the only other change is my sleep but its always weird!
i dont know how to start a dialogue about this with a doctor and scared they will say im depressed when i dont feel depressed!

Suicide thoughts don't always mean depression--sometimes they mean what they are:
suicide.
If you are taking the time to
actually figure out how you
would die, then there is part
of your psyche that actually
wants you to do it.
You may simply have some
brain cells that are misfiring,
or some electrical problem has happened in your nervous
system.
OR, you may be harboring
thoughts of hatred for yourself
or others, or want to "get even" with someone for harming you badly.
This gets pretty complicated
and only a professional can
pinpoint the problem.
the same way you began the
"dialogue" with us, is the same way you begin with a
doctor. You probably should
see an MD and he will refer
you to a psychologist.
If you get someone who won't listen, but puts you on
depression medication, be cautious. If he can give a
name to your problem, then
you get online (or wherever) and educate yourself thoroughly about this.
But, thoughts of suicide don't come into your life when
everything is rosey--there IS
an underlying problem somewhere.

You're experiencing symptoms of severe depression, but you're wondering why you don't "feel depressed." That's because depression isn't a feeling, it's a total brain state.
Feeling sad, or "blue" is one common symptom of depression, but not everyone who is depressed experiences it, nor is it necessary for a diagnosis.
Suicidal ideation, withdrawing from others, irritability, and changes in sleep patterns are all symptoms that are of concern. It's likely that you're exhibiting other signs that you haven't mentioned here, because they don't occur to you as being part of the same disease.
The best indicator that depression is a total change in the way that the brain operates is the effectiveness of anti-depressants. Clearly, there's more to depression than being down, needing to 'pull yourself together,' needing to focus on positives, or other remedies that well-meaning people sometimes suggest. The existence of low-level chemical solutions suggest that there is more going on in depression than meets the eye.
One other thing worth mentioning is that your development of suicidal thinking is showing a pretty standard trajectory. Suicide often develops as fantasy or intellectual exercise and grows into an obsession or an overwhelming desire.
See a doctor as soon as you can.
Your life is in danger.

Oh dear. Suicidal thoughts, sleep pattern changes and a change in attitude toward friends or pleasurable events. Those are all signs of depression, my friend (in fact, almost classic signs). You really, really need to speak to a counselor that might be available to you or a doctor. I know you may not be feeling "depressed," but all the signs are there at this point. As far as how to start a dialogue, tell your doctor what you just told us, it's that simple.

I'm glad you chose to seek some advice. Yes, these are all marks of depression. The fact that you don't notice it doesn't change that. I'm glad you don't feel like acting on your suicidal impulses, they say when you are you are actually insane. (I find that debatable, but that's the clinical diagnosis, anyway).
My advice? Find a psychotherapist. It doesn't hurt to take care of yourself. If you had some weird symptoms in a physical part of your body, yet didn't notice a physical change, yet your friends and family DID...you'd surely consult a doctor and explain the situation, no?
Why not take care of your mental/emotional health as well? You're very brave. And there's nothing to fear from it, so, go ahead and take charge of the situation!

Well your friends noticing a change in you is a major sign. Sometimes people don't realise a difference until they actually go in and see a doctor. I knew someone whose husband was depressed and he acted like he didn't need any help. It was getting so bad that the wife finally confinced him to get some help. When he went on the medicine the doctor prescribed he nodiced a huge difference. Go see a doctor, i bet they've seen a lot of your cases. You'll feel much better...believe me!!!

Doctor,
My friends have noticed that I've changed recently and that I have become irritable, distant, unapproachable, and angry. I don't know what to do. I've had some suicidal thoughts but have no intention upon inflicting pain on myself. Does this have something to do with me changing?
p.s. I don't think you need to see a doctor. I think to you need to talk to a counselor or a psychologist.
good luck with your friends and I hope and wish the best for you!!

You need to seek help from a doctor right away. What is the worst thing that can happen if you are told that you are depressed? You can choose to get help and seek out counseling or go on with your life the way it is. Which would be worst? It is up to you. If you are depressed you may not feel depressed, but you have the classic signs of depression. With the right help, mostly likely your depression will go away. Please go see a doctor asap.

You do need to go to the doctor, and everything you said to us is a good way to tell your doctor. and when you go to the doctor for this they have a questioner that helps them decide if you depressed or not. being depressed is not something that is like everyone elses. your symtoms could be different. i was mildly depressed and took a low dose of meds and it help change my whole outlook. i am now off the meds and still feel great. i just needed a small push in the right direction. and maybe that is just what you need. good luck and go to your doctor soon.

You can go talk to a phyciatrist.
Talk to your friends and see if they know any difference and wht can you do.
Talk to your parents.
You may be feeling angry and depressed.
I would say for advice, smile alot, talk with you friends about funny or good conversations, try making a goal in your life on what you really want to do,( so that might change your thoughts of suicide and dying to happy thought of achievement.) Whenever you feel angry just walk outside, breathe deeply, and do whatever it is that calms you.

well you certainly need to talk to someone. see your doctor about these changes, and try not to look at getting help as a bad thing. it is OK to be depressed as long as it only for a short period of time, if it continues then you need to seek professional help. there are many types of medications that can help with depression that have little or no side effects.
