You are under no obligation to do either...but you can bet that someone (in your family even perhaps) WILL think that it is bad for you not to attend either event. Being unable (or unwilling) to deal with grief until you are ready and in your own way does NOT make you a bad person and if you can live with the possible disapproval of your family/friends then you are free to make whatever decision you like.
I would suggest that you consider the feelings of the child's parents (your brother or sister?)...is it more important for you to protect your own feelings by not attending or is it more important for you to sacrifice your own feelings to help your brother/sister (and others) deal with their pain? Only you can answer that question!

No, you would not be a bad person.
A funeral service is more for the people left behind than for the deceased. It is our chance to grieve and to say goodbye. If you have already said your goodbyes, (it sounds to me as though you are already grieving) and you feel that you would be no support to the rest of your family, then I see no reason you should be required to attend.
I am sorry for your loss.
God be with you and bless you.

I am so sad for your loss. This has to be a terrible time for all of you.
Personally, I would go to the funeral. Sometimes, even when it is ripping our hearts out, we have to be with our families. Your family needs you as much as you need them. Please, don't cut yourself off from helping each other through the hurt and loss.

I was going to say that no one can tell you how to grieve and for you to do what you feel is best, then i realized this is your brother or sister's son! This is the saddest time of their life and you should be there to show your support of them. They have no choice but to be there.

I'm amazed at the number of people who come on to a public forum to find out what's right and what's wrong. Jeez.
