The average life span of a chihuahua is 11-18 years. Although 18 years is quite rare.

Usually a good rule of thumb is the smaller a dog breed is the longer they live. Chihuahua's have an average life expectancy of about 15 years but my wife and I met a woman with two 21 year old chihuahuas. They didn't look to healthy but they were still alive. Chihuahua's don't have a ton of health issues but they are more prone to broken bones as puppies, eye infections, colds and arthritis. But the can live long happy lives as long as you take care of them.

I heard of 12 to 15 years some do live to be up to 18 but it is rare.

A lot depends on their diet. A pup that is fed as if it is a spoiled child or on artificial food will have a much reduced life expectancy. One fed a natural diet of raw meaty bones (even toy breeds love crunching through bones) will not only live longer but be much healthier too.

Being that it's a purebred, you can't expect it to live anymore than 13 years and that's if you feed it the correct food and take it to the vet regularly.

I have one that's 12 and my Mom has one that's 16. They're pretty durable little guys!
