Hi.

MIL and I have a dilemma. She says you can't cross yellow double lines to turn into a driveway, she says you have to find the nearest street, turn into that, come back out and then turn to where you were wanting to go, thus not crossing the lines. I say that you are allowed to, to go/come from a driveway. Who's right? We're in NY>

yes you may turn accross double lines into your driveway the double lines are for no passing on your side and no passing on the oncoming traffics side but if your driveway is there go on in.

You can absolutely cross solid double yellows to turn in to a driveway. The one that always gets people, and the one that my wife just can't get through her head, is that you cannot cross a solid double-DOUBLE yellow for any reason. It is interesting to note that you CAN cross a double-double yellow if the inside lines are broken, and you ARE allowed to pass other cars where the double yellow has a broken stripe on one side. All this double double talk is making me hungry for a Double Double cheeseburger from In-N-Out. Too bad you don't have them in New York.

I live in Upstate NY also. It's perfectly acceptable to turn into a driveway even though it's necessary to cross a double yellow line.
