I'm very dissatified with my nose as is Mum too. We both have your very wide black people's noses(bigger than what looks attractive), and surprise surprise, it doesn't fit our faces that well.

Should we find out about plastic surgery? How much does it cost? What are the risks?

Although it may have once been true that people who got a nose job (or rhinoplasty) all ended up with the same nose, this is no longer the case. One nose does not, and will never, fit all. This is especially true when it comes to the African-American nose.

The anatomy of a human nose varies somewhat with ethnicity. A human nose consists of bone, cartilage, and skin. For many African-Americans, the skin is thicker, the bridge of the nose is usually shorter and flatter, and the tip is more rounded as compared to other ethnic noses. The nostrils may be wider and flatter. The nose may have a layer of fibrous fat under the skin and, in general, has more soft tissue and less cartilage at the tip. Caucasian, Hispanic, and Asian noses also have slight differences in anatomy.

While many people may want rhinoplasty to straighten or lower the bridge of their nose or to have a hump removed, some African-Americans want the bridge raised slightly. Sometimes a surgeon can accomplish this by fracturing the nasal bones and bringing the pieces back together to make the bridge narrower and higher. This is a process called infracturing.
However, sometimes increasing the height of the nose may require the use of an implant. The implant can be a piece of cartilage taken from elsewhere in the body (such as the ear) or from another section of the nose. Many surgeons use implants made of solid silicone (Silastic) or other inert materials.

African-American rhinoplasty can also involve changing the shape of the nostrils and tip of the nose. A surgeon can change the shape of your nostrils to make them narrower or less prominent. This usually involves making an incision at the sides of the nostril and removing a small sliver of the nostril. The incision is then closed and any scarring is hidden within the fold at the side of the nostril.

The tip of the nose can be refined by removing some of the fatty or fibrous tissue under the skin at the tip. The cartilage at the tip of the nose can then be adjusted or reshaped. In some cases, your surgeon may add cartilage from elsewhere in the body or use an implant of silicone or other material to reshape the tip of your nose.

One factor to take into account before deciding to have surgery is scarring. Darker skin tends to scar more than lighter skin, although this is not a hard and fast rule. Many African-American people tend to scar excessively and form raised scars called keloids. If you developed large or raised scars on cuts or incisions in the past, tell your surgeon. There are techniques and treatments that can help minimize excessive scarring.

Do as much research as possible. Find someone who has had a nose job that is similar to what you want that was really satisfied with the outcome. It's hard cause people don't like to talk about it.

You need to find someone who specializes in noses because noses are the hardest thing for plastic surgeons to do. Don't go to some surgeon who spends all day stuffing breasts.

As for the cost, the doctor will be very specific about the price if it is not being covered by insurance. But each one will be different in price too. Some operate in hospitals, others in small surgery centers etc. So the costs are all over the place in price.

My nephew's mom is african american and she had a very big nose and she was still a very attractive woman. Better looking than more than half of today's models. But she was very unhappy with her nose because it did not fit her other facial features so she said. She went to a plastic surgeon and they gave her a slimmer nose still a african american looking nose because she did not want a white nose but just slimmer nose and it looks great. But she did get it infected I am not sure how it got infected but it did and the healing time was almost doubled. She also ended up having my nephew and the genes are there he has her pre surgery nose so if you have it and your mom it's likely your children will to. The cost maybe different because we are in the united states but it was almost 5000 dollars. But make an appointment for a consultation and ask the dr to see his work because just because he has pictures on the wall does not mean he did the work. Some times its just art work. And I don't know how old you are but you may want to wait until your are atleast 18 because what I hated about myself as a teen I learned to embrass as an adult. Good luck to both you and your mother.

plastic surgery is really designed to correct a problem, not to improve what you have. But, it is perfectly possible they can alter the shape of your nose, although there may be some scarring either side where it is made narrower...go speak o a reputable surgeon and take his advice. Ask to see photos of what has been done and find out about the risks of scarring, bridge collapse etc then

Defo find out about it.......The price is anything from £1.500 UPWARDS, depending on what country you have it done in.
But what I will advise you on is to make sure that its what you want. You have to weigh up the pro's & Con's.

What I mean by that is...Is it worth the risk?? I personally think the risks are too high, what would you do if it went wrong??

Everyone was made different for a reason, I cant stand it when someone else is singled out because they look "different"

What the bloody hell is different?......Were all different in some way or another!!

Your fine just the way you are.......stay that way xx

honestly, you will get better results with self acceptance. and no risk of dying from the surgery or complications. so many times the changed noses are crooked or don't look exactly right, wrinkle funny or something. Try something else first, like a support group or therapy for self acceptance.
i think you are buying into racism by changing your naturally beautiful features to be more similar to whites. who says what is attractive. don't buy into white standards of beauty. make your own.

Well, where do you live, if in NYC then you are in luck because Park Ave has alot of them. It depends if you want a quality job because that might set you back 10K and the risks are the nose slanting, caving in, getting infections etc.

But that risk is minimized by going to a good person

I have two friends who had nose jobs when we were in our late teens, and it was good for both of them. Both were much happier with their appearance. One of them probably went for something too perfect and it looks fake, and the other one told the surgeon to improve it but not to make her look like someone else. I've never heard either of them express any regrets, but even then it was very expensive.

any plastic surgery in the UK is like mega-expensive and i doubt you'll be willing to spend thousands of pounds.
nose jobs are generally to correct the bridge of your nose anyway, not to slim it down..
if you are still set on getting one ... you can search hundreds of plastic surgery clinics online .. and book a consultation
good luck <3

The cost vary , from a lot all the way to %#$#@!! , that much!?!?

The risks are a very painful and long recovery, as well as infection or botched surgery, and cimplications from anesthesia, including but not limited to death.

But at the very least it will be painful and drawn out recovery.
