I'm leaving for training at the defense language institute soon and I was wondering what I could bring with me?

Also, feel free to add any extra advice on what to bring or what to do while there...share any experiences or just tell what its like, I'm really curious.

You really do not have that much room in the barracks, but you will need a computer that can run and I pod on and that has windows media player - get one that as a dual core processer since you will be using the internet, i-pod, and windows media player all at the same time. The ywill give you an i-pod when you get here so don't get one. Don't get one of those pocket translators, you will have so many books and you will be told internest site that you can use as a translator - well I guess you can if you want - I am selling a 12 language translator on Craig's list in Monterey if you want. What language? Monterey is great, but you will be in class 8-10 hours a day and have 2-3 hours of homework a night. Stay away from the fried chicken in the DFAC - it is good, but it will give you bad gas - being in a small class room with 6 people and having gas - bad idea. Save your money - too many people blow it on stupid stuff, save it while you can and your expenses are low. You will want to have a vehicle as well - you will go crazy on post all the time and to walk into town is OK - the walk back up the hill will KILL YOU - it is very steep. STUDY STUDY STUDY - that is the best advise - you don't want to get rolled, or even rocked out - you could get reclassed and that is usually not a good thing. Put your all into it - you don't want to fail and have on your record lack of effort - it will haunt you forever - if you fail - at least put your best into it. A cell phone is great to have. You can get discounts on your bill for being military. Enjoy your time off - go to cannery row, the aquarium, Big Sur, drive around old Ft. Ord, hang out on the beach, but you will have lots of time to do all that, just study and don't do anything stupid - you would be amazed at the stupid stuff that students do out here.

Hi there, Elysa!! Once you're there you'll have a really good idea what you have room for and what you're really going to need. My uncle was Navy and worked there at DLI for several years. From what I remember, it's a nice facility (although that WAS 35 years ago, now that I think about it!) And you'll probably want to share what you can with other Marines you're housed with. I know when my son was at Pensacola, he didn't want to carry a bunch of stuff with him, or have it in the barracks while he was in class, so he and his roommates sort of took stock of what each of them had and picked the best of it... One got the laptop from home... one got the Xbox... They bought a TV for $25 off some new Marines who were shipping out the next week... So they made due with what they had.

I'm not sure how long your school will be... but that'll also be a factor. Best advice? Just hang on until you get there and see what you REALLY need. When you're done with school you'll get orders and be shipping out to your Permanent Duty Station within a couple days... so you won't really want to have a ton of stuff to pack up and carry on an airplane.. (just a thought!)

Oh... and check your email... I just sent you one and will send you another real quick...

you may want to wait until you actually get there and find out what your Barracks situation is going to be like and how much storage space you will have. generally speaking, you will have room for the basics.. a few civilian clothes, a TV and a laptop.

word of advice: even if you are old enough.. stay away from the Mucky Duck. Food's terrible, the beer sucks and the reputation is awful. Go to the Brit instead.

DLI is a mind-blowing place to artwork, in accordance to pals I had who worked there (protection Language Institute). I lived on the peninsula for 2 a million/2 years, in Pacific Grove. it incredibly is a mind-blowing place to stay, in spite of the shown fact that it incredibly is gotten further and further high priced considering that I left, which replaced into 30 years in the past. We circulate lower back now and then for a weekend. it incredibly is eye-catching...... to notwithstanding in case you will get leave, ask your CO.....

You can bring anything. TVs, game consoles, books, tons of civilian clothes, anything really except the prohibited items....weapons (including large knives/swords, paintball guns, bb guns etc...). Have fun up there. Monterey is beautiful!
