Wow! Ask a simple question and get a bunch of hostile, sarcastic, hate spewed answers. But then I guess I expected that of all the atheists and "intelligent open-minded thinkers" (malarkey). The hatred from that group is getting kind of old.... YAWN. In any case, to those of you who did read the entire article before posting a comment thank you. All I wanted was your opinion on this latest scientific find. And yes, I do see that the last paragraph is significant to the whole article but that does not take away from the doubt this latest news casts upon the THEORY of evolution. Thank you all for posting your thoughts. To those of you who attempted to answer with evidence supporting evolution, it doesn't change a thing...its still all speculation at best. And to those who believe as I do, that we were created by an all knowing and all-powerful God and did not descend from ape like beginnings, God Bless and thank you for your support.

Evolution has always been a lie. The concept of it originated in ancient Babylon. It was part of their religion, and Darwin stole it from there.

We never "evolved" from anything. We were always only human from God's creation of Adam and Eve.

I read that article, and it is nothing surprising nor threatening to evolution. Evolution has been under attack lately, even by respectable scientists. But these arguments have been more of the origin and how life initially started and this is where evolutions origins come into question. How can such complexity of even a simple bacterial organism arise from nothing.

Evolution is not linear, it has been shown in numerous studies that there are long periods of no change followed by periods of rapid change, mostly spurred on by environmental factors, but sometimes not. Evolution takes place in a 3+ dimensional space, and to think that the mechanisms which guide it are as simple as "survival of the fittest" is naive, but i don't think that proving humans have multiple ancestors (which lived at the same time) in any way discredits evolution.

I do not "believe" in the Theory of Evolution. Rather, I accept it as sound science that has been proven time and again to be fact. Please, research the difference between "theory" and "scientific theory".

From the article, "The more we know, the more complex the story gets" Amen. That's science at its best. Always changing with new evidence. Not stagnating. Not becoming antiquated and useless.

By the way, you think all these answers here are spewing hate when in reality these people are passionate about defending scientific thought from religious attack. If that offends your delicate sensibilities, that is your issue, not theirs.

Absolutely, I believe in evolution, especially in contrast to creationism (since you're posting this in R&S). As a matter of fact, even the article finishes with this:

"All the changes to human evolutionary thought should not be considered a weakness in the theory of evolution, Kimbel said. Rather, those are the predictable results of getting more evidence, asking smarter questions and forming better theories, he said."

What the article is really trying to say is that science is constantly learning and revising their theories, and that the truth is actually a little more complicated every time they make a new discovery. Yup, it's not an argument against evolution, it's new knowledge about it.

Just because there are kinks in the theory does not mean that it is untrue. When aren't there kinks in scientific theories? Scientists often have to guess and test, or just look for more and more evidence until they discover the truth.

"All the changes to human evolutionary thought should not be considered a weakness in the theory of evolution, Kimbel said. Rather, those are the predictable results of getting more evidence, asking smarter questions and forming better theories, he said."

Evolution is just a fairy tale as far as I'm concerned. The theory is interesting reading, but there is no real proof whatsoever. Also, with evolution, scientists think that life appeared by an accidental accumulation of molecules that became self-replicating......please!!
Let's do a hypothetical experiment...suppose you have a gigantic bowl. You throw in this bowl, lumber, nails, wiring, glass, concrete, etc. In other words, everything you would need to build a nice house. You then shake and spin this bowl. You hit it with lightning, heat, cold, radiation, etc. You do this for millions of years. In the end, do you think you'll have a nicely built house from this? You would say, "Impossible!" In the end, you would need "intelligent design" to build this house.
Now this is a simple house. Imagine the complexities of DNA. Still think it's an accident?

I believe thousands of creationists rejoiced upon reading the headline of this article and could not wait to get onto Yahoo to post it "proving" they've been right, all the while doing as they always do (ignoring research, selectively reading, cherry-picking statements, etc).

Yes, I "believe" in evolution. Even if I didn't believe in it, evolution would still be happening and would still be a scientific fact. Now, creationism on the other hand...

It looks as if, judging by the evidence, we might have to adjust our thinking about evolution. The article suggests that our previous assumptions about "straight-line" evolution will have to be changed to include the notion that there were side-trips in the development of humanity.

The article in no way suggests that the theory of evolution is in error, but rather that evolution behaved in unforeseen ways.

yes evolution is true. And this information is nothing new. We have known for a long time that human evolution was not a simple linear process. We have known, for example, that Neanderthal and ancestral humans lived side-by-side and may even have interbred. We have known that during long phases of human evolution there have been more than one species or sub-species of hominid living in co-existence, in much the same way as there are many species of ape living in the world today.

And I'm afraid you are falling into the same uneducated trap that many do who decry evolution by stating that evolution is a THEORY and implying that "theory" means speculation. Evolution is a Scientific Theory. A Scientific Theory is much more than speculation or postulation. It is a model of a situation that fits all known facts; what you are describing is in scientific terms called a hypothesis.

Definition of Scientific Theory:-
A scientific theory is an established and experimentally verified fact or collection of facts about the world. Unlike the everyday use of the word theory, it is not an unproved idea, or just some theoretical speculation. The latter meaning of a 'theory' in science is called a hypothesis.

This only re-enforces evolution

Look the great thing about science is we can say ooo look this new evidence points to something different so we will change the according hypothesis within the theory of evolution accordingly.

I believe that we evolved as Human Beings, from clubs and cave drawings to computers and cellphones.

I believe that we all evolve every day, growing and learning and becoming better people.

I even believe that we evolved from prehistoric man,who may have been ape-like in characteristics ( which are all the findings really prove) into the forms we now have.

i don't believe we evolved from monkeys , but if we never evolved, we' still be wearing loincloths, leisure suits or spandex.
