Beheading is effective and is probably as humane as any other modern method if carried out correctly. When a single blow is sufficient to decapitate the prisoner, they lose consciousness within a few seconds. They die from shock and anoxia due to haemorrhage and loss of blood pressure within less than 60 seconds. However, because the muscles and vertebrae of the neck are tough, decapitation may require more than one blow. Death occurs due to separation of the brain and spinal cord, after the transection (cutting through) of the surrounding tissues. Consciousness is probably lost within 2-3 seconds, due to a rapid fall of the “intracranial perfusion of blood" (blood supply to the brain).
It has often been reported that the eyes and mouths of people beheaded have shown signs of movement. It has been calculated that the human brain has enough oxygen stored for metabolism to persist about 7 seconds after the head is cut off.

You live for a couple of minutes because your brain still has some residual oxygenated blood in it. In the days when England & France used to behead people, and the victim (defendant?) was praying when he/she put their head on the block, their lips kept moving after the axe/guillotine had fallen. Gross but true.

No one knows for sure, but it is belived that a person can still "live" (well, you know, still be aware of surroundings and think) up to thirty seconds after their head has been cut off. I don't think we will ever know what they are thinking, though, as the thoughts depend on the person.

something short of 5 minutes. depends on the circumstances but the brain can survive 5 minutes without air so i assume its less than that so actually you could think see but no breathing or blood pumping but you would go into shock almost immediately. so basically they would feel nothing after the initial pain of being cut if they didn't go into shock it would be some serious will power and pain tolerance and i'm sure they would feel pain and probably allot.

For several seconds, maybe even minutes. There are a few attempts to communicate listed here:
http://www.aintnowaytogo.com/beheading.htm
The description of one attempt in 1905 near the bottom of the page is pretty compelling.

In the days of the guillotine in France, some medical students were allowed to grab a newly chopped head and try to communicate with it. There was no response.

No more than a second or two, and that would depend on the definition of living!

umm ok. As soon as the main arteries and the brain stem is cut, everything stops. So they die immediately. also, The person doesnt feel anything because as soon as their spinal cord is ripped, they dont feel pain. they die.
btw, why do you want to know?
