Christians are still human and are still sinful. If your church told you that true Christians are perfect and never screw up, then you should find another church. That's just an incredibly inaccurate and uninformed view of how to identify a Christian. Christians do horrible things. Being a Christian is not about doing the right things, it's about having a relationship with Christ, and hopefully the right things come from that, but it's a process.
By the way, the Bible also says that God is holy, wrathful, vengeful, jealous, angry, feels sorrow and joy, etc. God is love, but that's not ALL He is. If your church told you that God is love and that's all you need to know about him, then you didn't learn the complete truth and you should find another church.
I will defend my faith, but not in an angry or argumentative way. If you ask me a tough question, I'll answer it, but expect a tough question back. This really throws most people off balance as they really don't want a debate. Some people get their hackles up when they get an answer that they don't agree with, and instead of engaging in debate, they attack the answerer.
There is NEVER a reason for anyone to be self-righteous. We are all sinners, and if a Christian thinks he is better than someone else, then that's just wrong.

Any person watching another person will rarely have even a rudimentary understanding regarding the attributes of God. Some of us are so exalted by our humility, so absorbed in our spirituality, so caught up in our piety, and so full of our own self, that we're oblivious as to what it's really all about. I'm sorry that you have had the experiences which you indicate with "so called Christians" and hope you'll not give up faith if you haven't already. I have had the same experiences and I understand where you're coming from, but I continue to do the best I can to ignore people and concentrate on God by conducting my life according to His precepts and not man's.

The reason some "so called" Christians act that way is that they are not walking in the Spirit. They are are carnal, which simply means they are not being led by the Spirit of God.
They bash and act self righteous usually because of some secret sin in their own lives and by doing that they think it will keep them out of the "spotlight" so to speak. Scripture teaches that "be careful, lest your sins find you out."
Please don't judge all Christian by the actions of a few. There are some flakes out there granted, but there are even more REAL Christians out there.

You are right, some Christians do bash and get defensive and act self-righteous. But so do some Atheists. Bottom line is, anyone who does that is wrong. It should not be done. But we cannot control others and what they do. What we can do is control ourselves and try our best not to be like that. Be the best you that you can, and don't become that in which you hate by focusing too much on it!

Yes, God is about love and forgiveness and humility. ABSOLUTELY agree- so if any one calls themselves Christians and they get self-righteous that is not right- however to go a little deeper here- God is also about righteousness, holiness, and justice. Without Christ our righteousness is as filthy rags. How did God show His love? By sending His Son Jesus into the world to die for the sins of ALL the world- and WHOSOEVER believes will not perish but have everlasting life. Why does God call for the shedding of blood for the forgiveness of sin? Because He is Holy and just saying He loves us does not save us- The death of His Son, and us admitting that we are sinners in need of a Savior. If a "Christian" acts like a pharisee and points fingers and never tells you how to experience the love of God, and only the wrath of God that is wrong- and I ask forgiveness for all who do that- however if we just talk about the love of God without talking about what we deserve -death for our sin- then we are only speaking half the truth. Grace is not cheap- it cost Jesus His life. I pray that I am humble servant of Christ.

There are many people who call themselves christian and use that label to bash others. Real Christians know that Jesus taught us to love our enemies as well as our friends. We are to show Gods love to everyone not just to those we think deserve it. You can't lump a whole group together based only on the ones who claim to be of that group and are more vocal. Just as you can't call all Muslims terrorists you can't call all Christians self righteous or out to bash everyone. In both groups it is a very small percentage of people who have lost the real meaning of the religion they profess to practice

Because Christians are just as imperfect as everyone else, we're as tempted as everyone else to say things that may come off wrong or be wrong.
It's ok for a person to believe strongly in what they believe, but not at the point of disrespecting someone else. Taking an example from Jesus and his disciples, you should listen to what the other person has to say, speak to your point, and then if the other person doesn't agree, speak to them in love, agree to disagree, and hope over time they can be persuaded.
I'm sorry if other Christians have treated you in a disrespectful manner.

Because just because a person accepts Christ into their heart and try to be a better person does not mean that they are perfect. We have to constantly work on it, and we can work all day everyday for our whole lives and still we will not be perfect. On earth it is something we are to strive for, yet know we will never attain.
We all react to people. And different people give different reactions depending on the time in their lives. I think sometimes people react out of fear of falling backward, or out of the idea that "well, I was a sinner, but I NEVER did that" I think it is human nature and something we have to work hard to overcome.
So, my only advice is to be forgiving, be understanding, and work on you... Maybe they will learn something from your example.

two reasons for the above,
first the person is still imprisoned in a body of sin and they therefore sin
the second reason is more profound and it may require wisdom to see it, but God calls his own to police his church
were the church more holy, some infractions would result in physical death to the ones creating problems, God would be judging them
While God is about love, he is equally about justice, righteousness and holiness. Read the bible completely, understand the warnings of Paul, the death of the two belivers in the opening chapters of acts when they stand be peter but are said to have lied to the Holy Spirit.
it is a warning to us to be better people, and we often fail don't we all.....
still have those skeletons in my closet from ebay, some assymbly required
