Question

I have three cats and I want to make them homemade cat food. I can't feed them raw meat and I would like it to be dry.
But what I really want is for people to answer this question...
Is it cheaper to make homemade food than to buy the stuff that is supposed to be good for them in the stores???
Please help!!

Home made here is what you do cause I do this. Cook for your self like chicken fish (salmon is great) try to stay away from beef and then use like a dark gravy and the cats eat it up and a can of food is like 2.00 a can and buying for your self and giving it to your cat when you are done you spend no extra money.

I doubt that it's cheaper to buy the stuff and make it yourself. Cat food manufacturers get a discount (like we all do) when they buy huge volumes of things. Plus, if you want to make a dry food it can be a real pain in the butt. I know that high quality cat/dog food is expensive, but remember, they don't have to eat as much of the high quality stuff as they do of the cheap stuff. You might look at Nature's Variety. I have two cats and they eat about 3/4 to 1 cup of food a day (that's the total food I put out each day and they're actually a little over weight). Anyway, you might try making your own treats, but trying to make a dry kibble would be expensive and difficult in my opinion.

It is probably cheaper just to buy the pet store food as they know what is good for the pets and if you made homemade food it would cost a lot for the ingredients

It is comparable in price to what you would pay in the supermarket and might actually be cheaper if you make it ahead of time and freeze in small portions.

However if you are making the food, then you know what is going into it and can make sure that your cats are only getting quality ingredients and ingredients that his or her body needs, not grains and carbohydrates that are commonly found in dry food that cats as carnivores do not need.

I have three cats as well and they are all fed a home made diet ,though mine is raw, yours doesn't have to be.

It's almost certain that homemade food will be more expensive - unless you have some unusual source of meats that are free (or close to it). The one issue to ensure health in your cats long term should you choose commercially available food is ash content. Ash adversely impacts the renal system of cats over time and can cause premature renal failure - shortening an otherwise healthy cat's life.

I think it is definately cheaper to buy the food than to make it b/c u need to buy all the ingrediants 4 the homemade but normal food its just one thing u hafta buy

i would just get the cat food from the stores if you are worried about the stuff that gets pets sick then go on google search for the bad food if you cant afford pet food then u shouldn't have a pet...don't make food for them they might not know how to react to it and get sick...please buy the food its better for the pet what ever brand u think is right...and also remember if u cant afford food for a pet you shouldn't have a pet :) np for the advise

I thought about doing this, especially after the wet food scare earlier this year. but you have to ask yourself if you have the time to hand make fresh food for them 2-3 times daily!

I have found a store brand "The Goodlife Recipe" My cats were really picky about the dry food but they LOVE this stuff. Seems pretty healthy to me.

Well it's certainly easier. But I don't see what's wrong with raw meat, after all they'd eat it all the time if in the wild or even if they're mousers.
