Your mother is dead wrong.
It's called sleep paralysis. There is no mystery to it as it is well documented.

This is a known condition within the medical world. However, scary though it is, there is nothing wrong with you. I have experienced it once, quite some time ago. I woke up, I was conscious with eyes open, but I could not move anything, although I wanted to. My nervous system wasn't responding at all to what my brain was wanting. I was effectively paralysed, and damn scared, because I thought that I might be dying. However, after a short while, it passed. I have read about this condition, it is quite technical and I have forgotten the ins and outs. It has never happened to me since though.

That's sleep paralysis. It's actually quite common.
During deep sleep your brain sort of shuts your body down form being able to move. THis is because dreams are vivid and we'd likely harm ourselves thrashing around or sleep walking or what not. There really is a lot written on it.
If you find it recurring you might want to talk to your Dr and perhaps have a sleep study done to find out if you have any sleep problems that can or should be treated.

OK listen it's not a ghost and this is 100% normal. It's called sleep paralysis. You are consious but can not move your physical body. It happens every time you sleep but you usually aren't consious then. Look up astral projection and sleep paralysis online you'll find some usefull information. Sleep paralysis is what the body does to prevent you from falling out of bed when you are dreaming.

the brain always shuts off the body from moving much when we sleep . because when we dream we will dream of walking or running and we would do that while sleeping and that would be a problem so the brain makes it so that we don't fall off the bed while dreaming of doing things.so it makes the body slow down.so sometimes.not all the time. but sometimes. we feel paralyzed. its just the brain doing its job while you sleep so don't give that another thought OK?Its Not ghosts or demons or spirits or whatever.ask God to protect you and he will if your worried. Give your troubles to God thru his holy spirit. doing that really helps me

Both hypnagogic and hypnapompic dream states (upon waking and upon falling asleep) involve paralysis - your body secretes chemicals that paralyze you while you sleep - these chemicals inhibit movement so that you don't act out your dreams (sleepwalkers have lower levels or none at all of these chemicals)
although a ghost is a spoooky alternative suggestion

i guess the ghost theory is one possibility and i do believe in ghosts, but in my opinion you were just dreaming that you were awake. it is a very common dream. the fact that i think you were dreaming is that you couldn't move you hand, legs or head. if it had been a ghost you would not have been able to move your entire body.

In what way was that clear? LOL, I have no idea what you are talking about...but it sounds as though you were dreaming that you woke up, than then you woke up for real. I've done that before, nothing to worry about.

According to Dreamcrowd:
To dream that you are dreaming, signifies your emotional state. You are excessively worried and fearful about a situation or circumstance that you are going through.
