All major city police departments have a sex crimes detective unit.
Smaller towns may have a detective or two that handle all latent investigations of all crimes or call in the state police to take over the investigation.

Most police departments in bigger cities have them. For smaller towns, there often are not enough sex crimes committed to dedicate an entire unit to sex crimes alone.

A LOT of police departments DO have a sex crime unit---especially those departments in our larger cities.... it might be called Special Victims Unit or Sex Crime Unit---or Sexual misconduct Unit... whatever... Smaller towns may depend on their STATE POLICE sex unit to help them...

Most don't. Big cities like LA, New York, Boston do. However, all the state agencies do have divisions for sex crimes. Most local departments turn the case over to them.

Some police departments have dedicated sex crimes units. Some don't. My local police department does not (too small). I believe LAPD does.
