The way that my mom taught me was to get a pound of pinto beans and sort through them to make sure their are not any broken ones or rocks in the package. Then you want to run them under the faucet and clean them, next you put them in a bowl and cover them with water and let them soak for at least an hour or even overnight if you can. Once they have soaked, rinse them again and place them in a pot with water covering them and then put on low to medium heat and let them cook anywhere from 2 to 5 hours. Keep checking to make sure that the water is not to low, and stir them every now and then and add a little salt towards the end. You will know they are done when you pick one up with a spoon and it easily smashes against the side of the pot. take them off of the heat and enjoy!

This is my recipe for Boston Baked Beans:
1 bag of small pea beans or navy beans
1 package of salt pork with a good amount of meat on it
1 large onion
1 tsp dry mustard
small bottle of molasses(don't use the cheap kind...it's too watery)
Soak beans in a large pot of water over night. I leave it on the counter.
Drain and pick through for rocks.
Cut the salt pork into chunks and place them in the bottom of an oven proof bean pot. Chop the onion and put in pot. Sprinkle the mustard on top.
Add the beans to the pot until 3/4 full. You may have some left that you can't fit in the pot.
Add water to the pot until the beans are covered.
Cover the pot and cook at 325 degrees for 3hours checking occasionly to be sure the water hasn't cooked down. If so add more water.
After 3 hours add 1/2 cup of molasses and stir well. continue cooking another 1/2 hour and add another 1/2 cup of molasses. Cook until beans are soft and tender. Add more molasses to your liking.

We make beans alot - what kind are you making? We usually have white beans, with chunks of ham. Basically it's all the same.....first sort the beans - picking out any soil or little rock bits, then soak beans overnight, rinse. Cover with cold water - about 1-2 inches over the beans, and simmer - don't forget to add flavoring, spices,etc.....depending on the beans you choose they will take about 4-5 hours to become tender.

HI!
I don't know what type of beans you would like but I'll give you an old standard.
Cook beans according to instructions on bag. (if you're using dry beans)
Add chopped onions and a ham hock or two. A chicken bouillon cube and a little pepper.
You can used pre-cooked bacon instead of the ham or even pork ribs.
I have also made them with bacon, onions, vinegar, tomatoes, bbq sauce and a little brown sugar.

Pick the beans, soak overnight (i put them in the refrigerator), rinse, put in a large pot and cook on low for 3-4 hours sometimes longer if you are making a lot. Make sure you put plenty of salt in them from the start. You might have to even add some more toward the end. I dice some onion up and cook it in mine, garlic salt, pleanty of salt and pepper. Sometimes I have chunks of ham in them. Sometimes I have polish sausage.

There are lots of different ways to make a pot of beans...
Chili beans use red beans or kidney beans. If you use dried beans, then you need to soak them over night in water, then drain. Put beans in a crock pot with a can of stewed tomatoes, tomato sauce, chili powder, garlic (fresh or powdered) cumin, salt, pepper, hot pepper flakes, a drained can of diced green chili and set on low. Cook for at least 8 hours. adjust seasoning to you liking by adding hot pepper sauce, more chili powder, etc. then serve with cornbread and butter, or crusty french bread and a salad.

Get a can of beans and a can opener. Pour the can full into the pot. Turn on the burner.
You can put in lots of different things, like ham or hamburger, and veggies, or...whatever. I like to add a can of diced tomatoes.
