Okay your info seems contradictory. You say you have an old tv/vcr combo with 1 a/v input and that you hooked up your dvd recorder output to the tv output to try and record but that it did not work. Then you say you dont have a tv output so which is it? Do you have an a/v output from your tv/vcr combo or not?
If you do have an a/v output on your tv/vcr combo then hook that up to the a/v input on your dvd recorder and see if that works.
If you don't have one then you won't be able to do what you want to.

so you want to record a vcr tape to a dvd is this correct? then you need to send the vcr signal. either. a/v out. depending on the age of you vcr it may not have it. it will be the yellow jack and one or both the red and white. or the regular cable out put. they have to be on the outputs on the vcr. to output the signal. and into the dvd rec. use a a/v input. if you used the a/v wires from the vcr . or the cable line.. they have to be the inputs on the dvd recorder. make sure you have the dvd recorder set to record from the input you have the vcr hooked too. either an a/v input or the cable. .

,, ok, ok. so if you dont have a output ffrom your vcr/tv. then you need to run thecable line. that you have going to your tv. to the dvd recorder first then run the cable to your tv. this will give you the option to record tv channels.
but you wont be able to record your vcr tapes onto a dvd unless your tv/vcr has an out put of some kind, if it doesnt. then you have to use a stand alone vcr that has those out puts.
wow that allot of info. sorry if i confused you. hoped i helped good luck

VCR Out => DVD-R In. DVD-R set to input X, showing what's playing on the VCR. Hit Record. Finalize a test disc and check for audio/video.
Oh yea, don't forget to make sure the DVD-R is going to the TV-In
