If you're trying to please your niece, try a board book with colorful pictures she can carry with her and chew on (try one with pictures of other babies!). A cuddly stuffed animal works also.

If you're trying to please her parents, try a front-facing car seat or an offer to babysit for a day or a weekend off!

Your lucky you have a niece instead of a nephew...girls are really easy to shop for...it depends how old she is...if she is

a) 1-12 months old: get her a little t-shirt or a stuffed animal,
b)1-3 years: a T-shirt and a stuffed animal word work also for that age
c)4-6 years: again the two choices or a barbie doll, or a barbie jeep, or dress up stuff, or a brat doll
d)7-10:same
c)11-15: make-up for 15, dolls, hoola hoops, pool toys if she has a pool, jewelry, clothes, shoes, purses...etc

Well, if you are tight for money I would recommend a fisher price animal. They are cute plastic animals sold in the fisher-price aisle of any department store. You could buy 2 for $10. If you want to score big and spend a little bit more I recommend the Parents brand musical instrument set. It comes in a large see thru drum, filled with maracas, drum sticks, tambourine, other loud toys. But all large and plastic and fun.
Don't get sucked into buying expensive crazy presents for the 1st birthday. There will be many many occasions to spoil your niece later on in life....when she will actually remember it and appreciate it!

1st birthdays are easy get something age appropriate. Books, dolls etc...toys but not something that will get on mom and dads nerves unless you are upset with them.
I would go for something like books or something to develope motor skills
