I have several (older) speakers that my dad gave me. These are quite large, including a 15" subwoofer and mid / high range (tweeters) speakers. These are quite high quality, for back in the day.

I recently purchased a nice 42" Samsung Rear Projection HD TV and love it. I am at the point of adding a receiver/speakers and I am curious if I can utilize these speakers...?

If so, is there a better type of receiver to use for this application?

What brand/model and what is the condition? What specs do you have?

Speakers have not changed a whole lot. If the sub is LFE fed then you should be OK to use all of them.

You will need a receiver for any speakers you use, Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha are a good place to start for receivers.

As far as the speakers go make sure to not exceed the max rating on the speaker when choosing a amp, the speaker rating can be greater than the amp but the other way around is dangerous.

Amplifier impedance is very important since this represent the electrical load your receiver is driving. Most speakers are 8 ohms but a few cheap ones are 4 or 16 ohms. You must make sure your amp is capable of driving the speaker at that impedance. Do not try to series or parallel speakers to get the proper load, it is not as simple as ohms law to correctly series/parallel speakers but some rookies in the forum ill tell you this is OK ( it is not just read the receiver manual).

Good luck and let us know how it turns out for you. I also would really like to know what speakers you have to help with a acoustical review of the model you have.

Yes you can get very good quality sound with old speakers IF they are in good condition. Make sure the foam surrounds aren't rotted out and that the cones aren't damaged.

Any good receiver should be fine. Just make sure you know what the impedance of the speakers are and make sure the receiver you pick matches.

Neighbor, there are so many things that can be incompatible with old speakers. I would just get new ones.
Call the manufacturer's help line and ask which brands are most recommended for their system.
Why mess around...right?
