I'm thinking of getting a new 20" flat-panel TV, but I have a short question. Are all TV sets made after March 1, 2007 supposed to be HD-compatible? I'm asking this because I have a DVD player and game console that are capable of outputting progressive-scan signals via component wires, and if I get myself a new TV, I'd like to take advantage of this.

If so, what would be a good model under $1000?

HD-compatible to me means being able to display an HD signal. If that is what you are asking then NO not all TV sets made after March 1st are HD compatible. However, they are supposed to come with an ATSC tuner which allows them to receive digital signals over the airwaves. If you are looking for a set that is able to display an HD signal then the box will have to say 720p, 1080i or 1080p. There are many good brands of LCD HDTV sets. Read up on some reviews and auditon them for yourself.

NO.

The only HD sets are HD sets and they come in TWO (for layman's sake) FLAVORS:

720p - 720 lines of vertical (top to bottom) data

1080i - 1,080 lines of vertical data

You MUST look to see what the image size generated by the set and ONLY trust the NATIVE (true) resolution.

720P sets are cheaper, and many advertisers will avoid listing the TRUE NATIVE resolution.

1080 sets will be more expensive and flaunt that you are buying a 1080 set, and will not mislead you in to thinking so, the price tag will reflect it.

NOT ALL HD STATIONS ON CABLE ARE 1080!!!!
Many are 720, so you wont be missing out on a better picture, but not buying a 1080 set means, when you DO have a 1080 signal available as in HD DVD, BLUERAY, PS3, and XBOX360 games and movies, you will be seeing a slightly inferior picture if you choose to buy the CHEAPER HD set- a 720.

Don't rule out projectors. There are many HD 720p projectors that are the best examples of what home theater should be. I run a panasonic 100 with 720p, connected to digital HD cable, XBOX360...PROJECTED AT 100 INCHES.

Scares the pants off you it looks so real.
You stop going to the movies, see it as a waste.

My setup with a high quality mounted screen, DIY fabricated from Wilsonart's Designer White [D354-60] laminate that you buy for 40 bucks from a construction supplier (lumber, formica); looks better than you can imagine.

Total cost: 1450.00
