I wouldn't spend over $5000(which is too much unless the car is in excellent condition). Shop around. Try these websites:

1) Ask if its possible to have a mechanic of your choosing look at the car - this helps with getting an idea if there are gonna be any costs relatively soon after you buy it.

2) look up the blue book value of the car www.kbb.com to get an idea if he is trying to get you to pay more than the car is worth (helpful if doing after the car was checked since they have 3 ratings for pricing used cars based on condition (physical and mechanical))

3) if after doing steps 1 & 2 and he still hasn't lowered his price then give a price if he doesn't want it, walk away there are always more cars out there.

Note: I did a quick check: assuming the car has all the premium extras that were for that year and that it doesn't have more than 97K miles on it, and is in excellent condition its private party resale value (as listed by kbb) is $2,055 at least for the Augusta, GA area. You can adjust for your area but for a 1991 car what he's asking seems a bit high.

Look up the blue book value on the car and offer him that. Go to Kelly Blue Book online (www.kbb.com) and look up the car. Just going by standard mileage and 'extras', that car in my area shows as being worth $1,500 if it's in excellent condition. A lot of banks won't lend more than the blue book value on a car, too, so if you're needing outside financing, that will come into consideration.

You are willing to spend that much money on a CAPRICE????? Are you kidding? I can see an Impala being worth that much, but I think you added to many zeros.
Check Auto Trader (www.autotrader.com) and Kelly Blue Book (kbb.com) to compare. Or even E-bay...

Did I miss something? Kelley Blue Book on this car in excellent condition from a private party is $1400. Hope, if you are buying this car, you have cash because there is no way to get it financed at that price. Please come back and add to your question to tell us how thick the gold is on this vehicle.

If he wants more than you are willing to pay, walk away. That works at dealerships.

If you really want the car, do not let that person know. Offer 8 and see what he says.
