There are often more dogs (many are mixed breeds which are lumped into the category of "pit bull") than there are owners. Pit bulls or dogs that appear to be pit bulls may be destroyed in dog pounds due to the stigma associated with the breed. Pit bulls and pit mixed dogs are a common sight in animal shelters. Owning a pit bull has its good points as well as the negative points. Pit bulls are not bred for dog aggression. Pit bulls, as with any dog, can be aggressive if they are mistreated. Pit bulls are basically hardwired to listen to their owners. This makes training extremely easy. However, it must also be said that if an owner trains his pit bull to attack humans, it will do so without hesitation. They thrive on pleasing their owners, no matter what the cost. And while their attacks aren't among the vast majority, they are more dangerous because of the breed's tenacity. They do have a very high tolerance to pain.
Although friendliness and tolerance towards humans are traits of the breed, there are, as in any breed, those that are dangerous toward animals as well as humans. It is the owner's responsibility to be in total control of his dogs, and there are countless attacks that show just how unsuitable this breed is for some people.
Regardless of who he is, any owner of a pit bull must train the dog well. Lack of proper socialization can lead to a dog with aggressive tendencies towards humans, therefore completely against what the breed is about. Under the care of an overly permissive or uneducated owner, pit bulls can become very dangerous dogs. However, as said before, pits can also be extremely loyal, protecting, and intelligent breed that can be the strong point of the household.
Though the rumors are that the breed is an aggressive, angry miixture of blood-thirsty hatred, the pit breed is actually very loyal and gentle, if taught to be so. As I have said countless times, it is not the dog that is the problem, it is the owner that trains it to be that way.

Pit Bulls are no worse than any other dog. They have a bad reputation because they have been trained over the years for dog fighting. Pit Bulls have the ability to lock their jaw and that reason is the main reason they were used for fighting. Beside that they are smart, generally happy and usually willing to please.
A lot of the bad press you hear is due mainly to owner neglect. However the dog catches the blame. If you chain up ANY dog, neglect ANY dog, abuse ANY dog they can become mean and you are then playing with a loaded weapon. The issue… when a Pit Bull is neglected and loses control they can do more damage to their aggressor.
Most common dog to bite their owner: Cocker Spaniel (but Lady doesn’t do much damage)

There may be more reports on the males because of the jerks that use them for fighting. I had a red nose, fawn pit named Buller. He was trained just like any other puppy growing up and "babied" all his life. He was a rescue dog for me. Anyway I can't tell you how many times HE ran for cover, cattle got on our land, other dogs and even a big pot belly pig once. He didn't know what any of these critters were and would run into the house, or under it. He loved Popsicles, playing ball and curling up next to the fire in the winter. I don't really know if it was the way he was raised, or just him but he was a great member of the family and lived to be 15. I hate that ANY breed is ruined by people that want bigger, meaner, fighters, it's sickening! I hope that your sister has as much luck / and love with her girl as I did with Buller.

This comes down to a few bad apples spoiling the bunch. Pit Bulls are great dogs and just like any other breed of dog if they are taught to fight that is what they do. Gender has no baring on if the dog will bite or not, its the way the dog was brought up and what it was encouraged to do. Remember punish the deed not the breed.

Male un-neutered dogs are found to be involved in the highest percentage of dog bites. However, these stats are for ALL breeds of male intact dog. Not pits. In fact pits are in the lowest 25% of breeds likely to bite you. Spay your female anyway- the last thing this world needs is more pit bulls, and it's healthier for her.

The truth is pit bulls are good family pets, they're better with kids than dalmations are. If you get a puppy then you should treat it right. Pit bulls reputation was ruined beacause people purposly train them to be gaurd dogs or be in dog fights. If you treat it well then you will will have a perfect dog. Besides
pit bulls are cute.

I also have a nephew who is mexican, so is he more likely to stab someone since he is mexican??
My point is that you are assuming that she will attack because it is a stereotype. Yes, Pit Bulls are aggressive, but you have to realize that pits are capable of causing damage when they bite, therefore, medical treatment is more likely necessary when bitten by a pit rather than a chihahau (sp). There are a lot of dogs that bite, but many of them are not capable of causing damage so it never gets reported.
Typically, males are more territorial than females.

I don't know about the reports, but I believe it is all in how the dog is raised. I believe males are most likely to be used as fighting dogs, so that may be why they are considered more vicious, but my aunt had a male pit that was the sweetest thing.

Dogs are animals. Sometimes they attack people. It doesn't matter what sex or what breed. I have a female pitbull and I have been around many other pitbulls and nothing bad has ever happend. I would not trust and dog fully with kids. For that matter I wouldn't trust any animal fully around kids. Just be aware that attack can happen with any animal. Just because it is a female red pitbull doesn't mean that it will attack you though. Pitbulls are great dogs....if they are brought up correctly.

Pit bulls are one of the most gentle creatures its all in the up bringing. When they are taught to be mean then they will be so don't worry if you raise the dog in a loving environment then you will not have a problem.
