I have found that having them go before bed is a good start. If he is still having problems staying dry wake him up just as you are going to bed and have him go again, chances are very good he will be sleeping so hard by this time that it will be almost autopilot and he won't even realize in the morning that you woke him. After doing this for a while he may start to wake himself and go in the middle of the night.
Also, my friend has a 5 year old with this problem and she loves setting her "pee" alarm clock each night then getting up and going when it goes off.

Who is it an issue for? I am sure your son isnt concerned, if it is an issue for you are your anxieties rubbing off on him? It isnt important at his age to be dry at night. My friend has a 7 year old who still has the odd accident and whenever she has spoken to the professionals they do not seemed corncerned. I am not saying that you are, but could it be the possibility that you are trying to compare him with your friends children? He is only 4, no one else knows except for you, dont get hung up about it, when he is ready he will be dry. Good luck and stay relaxed it will work out and take each night as it comes.

I don't know about your 4 year old son, but this is what I did with my son when he was 1 1/2 - he is 4 now - okay, well, he came off the bottle straight at a year old, was on a sippy cup for 6 months after, I would allow him to take it to bed with him, he usually got juice - well he urinated more - well when he was 1 1/2 years old, I noticed he would urinate so much that it would seep out of his diaper onto his sheets/blanket - so that's when I decided that he was no longer allowed juice/milk - just water - within 2 weeks, he stopped urinating - so before he was two years old, he was out of diapers, into big boy underwear and used the potty - never wet the bed, hasn't since...Im not sure if I just got lucky, or if this blessing has happend to others - but my suggestion would be just allow him to sip water through out the night!!

I don't know what you mean by 'dry'....
If you mean keeping him from urinating at night, this is what I did with mine and still do... His bedtime is 8:30. After 7:00 he cannot have anything to drink. And I make sure he uses the bathroom right after dinner (we try to finish by 6:30) and then again after he brushes his teeth before bed. Sometimes its a little more difficult than other times, but its definitely worth it.

Try not giving him a drink for at least an hour before bed if you can. If this still doesn't work, when you are going to bed yourself, wake him to use the toilet. He should be fine after a few weeks.

By "dry" I am assuming you mean he is wetting the bed. With my children I wouldn't let them have anything to drink after 6pm. I would let them have a sip or two but that is it. Right at bedtime I would have them go potty, and give them one small sip of water and thats that. If they have very little to pee out, it really helps with learnig to hold it. : )

when my wife and i wanted our eldest to go through the night dry, we put pull up Nappy's on him and told him they were big boy pants. once he got used to wearing them at night we used to get him up and sit him on the loo a couple hours after he went to bed then again when we went to bed. he soon got used to getting up when he needed a wee. it just takes time, so don't try to rush him and be prepared to have a lot of Patience ;-)
