Depending on where in San Diego you are comming from it will take you 2.5-3 hours to get to LAX. For the status of the flight the best thing to do is go to the airline's web site for real-time information. However, if the flight is less than a couple of hours you may not be able to do this before you leave.

But be sure to take advantage of the Cell Phone waiting lot. This is where you can park and wait for your friend to call when they land. You can then just go to the arrival level and pick them up at the curb

Most airlines will send you a flight status report to your cell phone if you go the airlines website and type your info in.
I think LAX is pretty easy to get around since it is rather small. Google or Yahoo map your trip in advance so you have good directions. It's just a straight shot up the North 405 and if you follow the exit signs for the airport you will be ok.

The best solution to this is to both have charged cell phones which are turned on in the terminal. Arrivals are on the bottom level. Since you can't go to the gates anymore, you might meet at the airline's baggage claim or something like that. They have a map online where you can actually track the flight during it's journey, but unless you have a WIFI carded laptop, it won't do you much good on your way from SD...but the airport is WIFI all over for free. (Note: the online flight map is sometimes not right).... Good Luck...

lax.com but you must know the airline and the flight number. you can also go to the airliner's website but again you'll need the flight number. also be ready for some serious traffic. take the 5N to the 405N thats the easiest way.
