It depends on the contract the Soldier makes with the US ARMY. Usually the longer someone signs up for, the bigger the bonus incentive, so people tend to sign up for a slightly longer time. I've heard of contract for as little as 2 years (usually a re-enlistment) to 7 years or more. The average is for someone signing up the first time is 3-4 years. But it really depends on the contract. And it's not one you can get out of. If you try to break your contract, you can get a dishonorable discharge, which can affect everything from getting loans to getting jobs in the future, or you can be considered AWOL and face jail time.

A soldier signs a contract, just like a basketball player, or a teacher. They stay for the duration of the contract, 2 - 6 years, unless they are involved in a conflict while the contract is in effect. They can be held indefinately, or until the conflict is over in that case. Most soldiers stay in for one or two terms, or until they have enough money and education (or educational benefits) to make it in the civilian world. A few, like me, go back in because they miss the camraderie and lifestyle after they get out. A soldier can make a career out of the military, the same as any other profession, but usually less than one third make that decision.

Now if you are asking how long a soldier stays in a combat zone, that is an entirely different thing. It used to be that soldiers were rotated out of combat zones after one year, but the Iraq war has forced the Pentagon to require soldiers to stay longer. I believe the new requirement is a year and a half. They are supposed to be allowed to stay out of the combat zone for at lest one year when they are rotated out, but sometimes soldiers get transferred to units that are returning short of that one year mark. There are methods by which a soldier can request not to go in those situations, but not all of them do.

I hope this answers your question. If I didn't nail it, I am sure that one of the other members will get it done.

I was in the 3rd infantry division. If that's what you mean, its just a regular division of the army. Minimum enlistment time in the army is 2 years plus basic training. Some states require longer enlistments for some reason. Initial enlistments can also be 4, or 6. when reenlistment time comes they can sign up for as much as 8.

stay in what? deployments are 15 months and a solider is given oportunity to pcs and move somewhere else or to stay with the unit they are with they can stay just as long as they want to with a unit unless the military says otherwise

however a solider is given a choice to stay or not with a single solider it is 2 years and a married solider with dependents ie wife kids its 3 years every 3 years a solider is given a choice to change units or stay with there unit

the mimum enlistment contract is 4 years but with another 4 years in reserves the longest a solider has stayed in the army is 20 years

I was in the 1st Armor Division before it changed to the 3rd Infantry Division. I was with them for two years before transferring to 11th Cav.

What do you mean by "stay in?"
Stay in the Army? Stay in that unit?

Staying in the Army is a personal choice. I stayed in for 26 years. Depending on your rank you can stay in longer up to 30 years and I think they are changing that to be even longer.
