if I don't believe in 'God,' who then is responsible and what's the purpose of hurting my heart so badly? I need to understand. The only explanation that makes sense to me, is that life really has no value - it just, well - 'is' - until it isn't. Pointless nothingness. Thoughts?

At times, life simply sucks.
A magical man in the clouds is not responsible for this. Sometimes it's just life. Unless it's my husband and he invites people to stay at our house for the week and tells me the night before. Then it's him that sucks.

You asked and answered your own question with the best possible answer. If you refuse to acknowledge that there is a God that's fine but you're right, life is until it isn't. I believe there is a God but don't believe that he creates pain or love. I just think that he created us and then just let us be. I don't think you can have a relationship with him nor do I believe that there is a heaven or hell. So even though I believe there is a God I am also forced to believe that my life has really no point but to live until I die. I live morally and rightfully I just don't believe in the organized religion. I give my own life meaning. I have a great boyfriend that I hope to marry one day, and I have great friends that give my life meaning. I'm sure once I have kids one day my life will have a lot of meaning. You're life can have meaning without believing in God but you have to give it meaning yourself.

Without God in your heart and life, it is not surprising that your life is pointless nothingness. Christ's love gives me a reason not only to go on, but to go on with a purpose. Knowing that He is always there, and He is always the same comforts me. He pours blessings out on me continually. I, in turn must learn to continually bless others. The main problem here is that most wish no blessings. Not from God, not from me in the name of God.
Pointless nothingness sounds about right for those outside His love and grace.

Yeah, I've been there. When you are in pain you want someone to have to pay for it, and you want to cause them pain too. I've been mad at God. I feel like everything has gone wrong, but I belive in Him and I know I'm going to be ok. He's not terrible, He's actually really amazing and so good you wouldn't believe it. Unfortunate things happen--six people have died in my family since last September, one of whom was only 19. I have anxiety issues. But it's all cool, because no matter what life dishes out, God is with me. Now I don't know you, your life, who you've been, are, and will be, but try not to be mad at God. I'm not anymore. You may discover a better friend than you ever imagined.

The Christian God is *portrayed* as heartless in the Christian's own holy book. There are many other Gods or you may believe in none. Life has only one true point. Gain as much knowledge and wisdom as you can and then plan on learning more in the next cycle.

What came with our evolution that resulted in a large cerebrum, capable of abstract thoughts, was a need for significance. People turn to supernatural beings for this, along with uncertainties or imaginative realities. Life exists because living things have a biological need to reproduce and make more life. Live life to the fullest, because this is the only one you've got.

I'm thankful for everyday God gives me and my loved ones. Maybe thinking on a positive note would help. Sure sometimes we get mad at God, but sooner or later it seems the answers will come with time. Bad things happen, but it's not always Gods fault...it's mankind's fault or in some way or another it's your fault. The point is to find God and believe in him. Then when you die,..go to him.

The questions that are posed like the one you're referring to are asking questions hypothetically to show that even if he did exist he has made action X and action Y which would make him a scrupulous character even if he were to exist. Human self importance is the only real importance to life. That's the reality, accept it. We have the option to make the most of it and appreciate the single chance we get at living.

If you don’t believe someone, it means you think that he is a liar. The Bible says that those who don’t believe God accuse Him of lying. Martin Luther said, "What greater insult ...can there be to God, than to not believe His promises." See Hebrews 1

Life is simply what you make of it, with or without God, with or without subjective purpose. There is no general entity responsible for how you feel; it simply a consequence of your environment.
