Primoa is right that students can initiate and lead prayers for themselves. It's just that teachers can't force students to pray. I think teachers should keep their opinions to themselves about both politics and religions. That should make everyone happy.

Got another taxi driver & priest one. A taxi driver in New York pulls over and lets a priest get in. The priest sits down and tells him where to go. While he is driving, the taxi driver sees a lawyer walking across the road, and not just any lawyer - this one screwed him out of $10 grand a year back. The taxi driver wanted to hit him really badly, but he didn't want to do it in front of a man of God. So, he hatches a plan. Right as he pulls up near the lawyer he pretends to pass out at the wheel. He loses control of the car and crashes into another taxi. The next thing he sees is a hospital ceiling. He is hooked up to an IV in a bed. He sees the priest who had been in the car accident sitting next to him, praying. "You're alive! Praise the Lord!" the priest says. "Did I hit him? That lawyer that was crossing the street?" the taxi driver asks. "No," the priest replies, "but I got him with the door."

Why not? Aren't teachers suppose to set the example and help protect our children and provide them with valuable resources and knowledge? Shouldn't our kids be able to come to our teachers with anything and get help from them? If a cashier or taxi driver wanted to pray with me, why not? Since prayer really doesn't hurt anything, what's the harm in it?

I believe in God, but I don't think public school teachers should be prayer leaders. Nor do I think religion should be a taboo topic in class. People argue from extreme positions, all, or nothing. We live our lives between those ideals. Your local school board should have complete control, and you should be involved with that board. Neither zealot, nor atheist should go to a higher political power to make one rule that fits a plural society.
p.s. public work is very different than private business. I pay taxes. And I drove a taxi for 20 years, so maybe you should pray in a cab...quietly...

Well....
For one, as long as the prayer is student initiated....then it is more than legal. But a teacher cannot force a student to pray.
So in my opinion, it's okay for a teacher to pray with their students....as long as the students initiate it.
And the difference with cab drivers and cashiers:
You can simply tell the driver to stop and let you out....or....you can simply walk out of the store if you don't want to hear it.
