When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. And if the slave girl's owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment. (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT)

So these are the Bible family values! A man can buy as many sex slaves as he wants as long as he feeds them, clothes them, and screws them!

If you say the old testament doesn't apply, the adam and eve story and God's creation goes down the drain

What does that have to do with black people. You automatically assume that just because it says slave their talking about black people. I think the term endentured servant would be a better description here than slave, and notice that the father has to sell his son or daughter. I think this would only have been done by poor families wanting to improve the quality of life for their daughter by selling them to a rich man who the father would believe could provide for his daughter better than he could, or in the sons case provide him with training so that when his six years are up he can have a marketable skill to provide him with a better living.

You are incorrect. The old testament laws, including the ones you mentioned, have been fulfilled. This means that they are closed, and replaced by newer laws as outlined in the New Testament of the Bible. That, in essence, is the entire purpose of the New Testament. This is the new life we are free to lead, free from the burdens of the Old Laws.

Wives, even in the old testament, had rights. Children were a precious gift, and having as many as possible was desired. Women had every right to expect their husbands to give them children. Any man who failed in his "husbandly duties" could be punished. If a man entered into a marriage, he had to treat his wife properly. If the man elected to have more than one wife, the wives were equals, and each one had rights to the man's time and property. Again, failure to treat each wife properly resulted in punishment.

Slavery in the Old Testament was different than that of more modern times. Most Old Testament slaves were your family or other relatives. If your cousin, for example, were to fall on hard times, you or one of your other relatives would "take over" his property and his family. You would become responsible to pay is debts if they were owed to someone other than yourself. You would be responsible to ensure that your cousin and his family were properly cared for, including food, clothing, shelter, etc. The family members capable of working would work for you for half the wage that an outsider would be paid.

In most cases, the term of slavery would last for seven years, after which your cousin could be put back into his home and resume his position in the community.

If he was unable to do so, then the term of slavery could be extended. In no case, however, could the term be longer than 49 years. In Jewish law, every 50th year was called a "Jubilee" year, and all property had to be returned to the rightful owners, or their heirs. No if's and's or but's.

The bible specified that any slave could elect to become a permanent slave if they loved their masters. They did this by piercing an earlobe and wearing a particular kind of earring.

Slaves could also be purchased or acquired by act of war. These slaves had to be similarly cared for, but they were generally considered "permanent" slaves. Anyone who mistreated a slave was punished by the community.

Any slave who did not elect to become permanent could purchase his freedom. They could save funds out of their wages and buy their freedom from their masters. As long as it was done under the law, the community supported the purchase.

I'm not black, but I would like to answer anyway. You are totally missing the point. The passage says, "If he himself marries her..." I don't know how it is in your house, but my wife is not my slave.

Your real problem is the fact that the Bible seems to condone slavery. In the ancient world, slavery was not racist like it was 150 years ago. The Jews themselves were slaves to many nations .

Man, you come in here and throw scripture that you do not even understand, and a limited knowledge of Old Testament law as applied to New Testament grace and expect people to want to respond to you?
You are just another lost person who is looking for someone to agree with him so that he can believe he has an excuse for denying Christ and refusing to follow the God of Holy Scripture.
You are not stupid, but you sure are spiritually in the dark.

Why do you address your question to black Christians ? At the time that was written any and all people of a defeated country were sold as slaves - - - black, white, green, chartreuse, or Scotch plaid.

It was not the Christians who made those rules up. You're blaming the wrong group of people. There were no 'Christians' until after Christ. Christians follow the words of Jesus Christ.
True we apply a lot of what is written in the bible to our lives, but we don't go around stoning people and cutting heads off like a certain group of Muslims. We want to live in peace. Oh sorry,...I'm not black. Jesus Christ taught LOVE...

No those are not Bible family values. Bible is also a history book. It tells us how things were back in THOSE days also. We are talking here that this happened a couple of thousand years ago.

You've found us out. Secretly, Christians of all ethnicity's have been selling their daughters into slavery for more than six years...but not to foreigners.

I swear, there should be a minimum competency exam before you are allowed to post on R&S.

Hey, by your logic....the code of Hamarabi doesn't apply anymore either.....so I guess that the Renaissance never happened.... If you want to debate, at least give us the courtesy of an argument that makes some sense.

i'm not "black", but the Old Covenant was for the Israelites only. The New Covenant is for the whole world. The New Covenant by Jesus' sacrifice, cures the original sin of Genesis. God bless.
