While the human female may appreciate gifts, and cats appreciate the "you are the food person" situation, you can find out the truth when they are not receiving anything and you are just spending quality time with them.
My experience is that the majority of ladies and cats just want appreciation. Many a female and cat have "flicked me off" or "given me the tail" for taking them for granted. Unconditional love from cats (and women) takes time and has to be earned. I've googled a couple of articles for you, to help.
Take your time and enjoy the ride. The both women and cats can be the purrfect companions.

Anyway, for a girl; maybe find other ways to treat her....don't buy her stuff, but do other little romantic things. (If you just quit buying her things but you used to, she may think you stopped liking her...can be delicate.)
For a cat; a cat will like you or they won't. Has nothing to do with what you buy them.

Don't buy stuff. Give money to your friend and have him buy everything. Give your cat or girl nothin but lovin.

Don't spend money on them. Don't buy your cat food and ask the old lady to buy your dinner. The reaction should tell you where your at.

Cats don't love anyone, they simply use them, and are therefore infinitely preferable to girls as you always know where you stand with a cat.
