Not all children do it, but it's common. It's a security device; it helps them to feel comforted in unfamiliar situations. It's roughly analagous to an adult fidgeting with keys in their pocket, or picking at their nails, or even crossing their arms. It's a defense mechanism and there's no real harm in it. They will grow out of it eventually (or may need gentle weaning off the item).

Some children find comfort in blankets, same as favorite soft toy to sleep with.My nephew had a blanket until about 3 or 4,he is normal. Not all babies/children do this, but normal for others.

Yes my son used to carry his baby blanket around and my daughter has a pacifier and blanket all the time and go nuts if I can't find it all kids have different things for security and comfort like for example when my two year old daughter gets upset she gets her pacifier and blanket and lays down and takes a nap

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a blanket and being a child! Why do people get so upset about that and call the parents silly or stupid? I would rather have my child walk around with a blankey rather than there thumb or a suck plug in there mouth. It's for security that is obvious. It is a comfort thing. Hell, I am 24 and I am not ashamed to say that I still have my blankey baby! There is nothing wrong with it.

No not all children have a security item, but in our culture where children are constantly forced to be "independant" it is common for children to form attachment bonds with objects.

most children will attach themselves to something, whether it be a blanket, a toy, or something else. it's a security thing

Because the parents are silly enough to let them because initially they think it's cute..........until the kid is five and dragging around a dirty rag. I would set limits, the blanket stays in the bed/crib and they can't have it until it's time for sleeping.
