The rear tires are unevenly worn (outer part of treads) and are to be replaced. The front tires look ok. Is there anything else I should look for? Aside from proper inflation, what else would cause rear tires to wear unevenly?

On some cars, you can realign the rear wheels, on some you can't. The other major cause of shimmying at highway speeds is one or both of the wheels being out of balance. This is an easy and inexpensive fix, but don't bother doing it until you get the new tires. Get the shop to check on the alignment also, because that's what is causing the uneven tread wear.

depending on how the tires are worn it could be caused by improper tire pressure. But How many miles to you have on the vehicle? When did u last have the shocks inspected. If the shocks are bad they might cause uneven wear. Also if the brakes are locking or dragging could cause the tires to drag and that would cause spots. You have un even wear on only the inside or outside the camber might be off and it will cause uneven wear

A biggie with tire wearing right is rotation, you MUST get them rotated every 6K-9K miles. The shake won't quit until you replace them with new tires because since they are worm uneven you can't take that back it's too late for these tires but not your new set, I had the same problem before and learned my lesson about rotation.

If you tried the wheel alignement and you still feel the shaking at 55mph than it could be one of the bearings. To know if thats the problem, you will hear a noise starting at 55mph. If you hear a noise turn off your engine and you will find out the one that has a problem.
