I parked my car at an Imperial Park, a privately owned parking lot for work in Seattle. Because I stayed until after 6pm, I recieved a notice on my windshield to pay by mail. I put the notice in my car and did not pay it. The original parking amount was for $12.00. The next thing I recieved was a notice that this had been assigned to a collection agency. I never recieved any warning or reminder or notice that this was going to happen. The bill was $60.00. I called up "Parking Collection Service" and told them I was not going to pay $60.00 but that I would happily pay the original $12.00 fee. They said, "we will note your refusal to pay"! and then they hung up on me. I read the letter sent, and it says failure to pay may result in Further Collection Efforts. I don't know what this means, but I feel scared that this will now be on my credit report. Will it?

It could end up on your credit report eventually. They could even take you to court and get a judgment. Some collection agencies are going after even small amounts.

I suggest you call the parking place and see if you can negotiate a settlement. It's going to cost you more than the original $12 but you might get it dropped to $20 or $30.

Forget about contacting the BBB. That's a private voluntary organization that has absolutely no authority to enforce anything.

I agree $12.00 dollars has already turned into $60.00 If I was you I would pay as fast as I can..Things can and will trun out ugly all over a starting blance of $ 12.00.

probably not. it is not a credit issue, it is a private issue. The collection agency is rude because they get a cut of what they collect. call the garage and tell them your situation ( you may want to hold back you ignored it) if they are not understanding then write to the BBB, they listen to them

It might end up on your report, and yes, they could take you to court and get a judgement against you if they wanted. Just pay it. I know it sucks...but you don't want to deal with the hassel of going to court.
